Mozart Café and Café Landtmann in Vienna Austria
One of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Vienna is just to hang out at one of the many lovely outdoor cafes and enjoy coffee and cake.
The Austrians sure love their sweets, and their cake game is strong. Café Landtmann is one of the most well respected cafes in the city, and they have locations throughout. They call themselves the “epitome of the period-style Viennese coffee house.”
Cakes & Pastries
Guglhupf cake is an Austrian classic, and it is proudly displayed at Cafe Landtmann.
It is a chocolate vanilla marbled cake (with a bit of lemon zest) made with baker’s yeast and baked in a bundt shaped pan.
Apple Strudel is also a classic. The version at Café Landtmann is chock full of apples an has a a beautifully crispy and light exterior. The heavy cream in which the pastry was swimming was a bit much for me, but I think if you love cream it might be fine.
Nibbles and Snacks
I was just there for afternoon tea, so I ordered a few small bites.
I also tried another Vienna classic, beef consommé. It came with a choice of either “pancake sliced”, semolina dumpling, or liver dumpling. I’m not a huge fan of liver, but I was really, really curious to try the other two. Usually they don’t let you, but my dining partner spoke fluent German, so he asked on my behalf, and the server was kind enough to give me a bit of both.
The sliced pancakes are literally like flat noodles that were cut from a flat pancake. The semolina dumpling is boiled and tastes pretty much like what it sounds like. My dining partner said liver was his personal favorite.
It was fun to try both of these. I may choose one or the other depending on how hungry I am.
Café Landtmann serves a full lunch menu, and gets quite crowded during the lunch hour. However, I didn’t have a chance to have lunch here this trip.
Coffee at Cafe Mozart
Another time, while wandering through the beautiful streets of Vienna, I stumbled upon this Cafe Mozart. Once I sat down, I was tickled and surprised to see that the menu they serve is identical to the one I had at Café Landtmann.
I decided to sit outside and enjoy a nice warm cup of cappuccino while watching the city life bustle around me.
Definitely try to find some time to relax at a cafe while in Vienna!
