It’s time to get back on track with training
When setting new fitness goals, sometimes you can get a little off track, and that’s okay! Depending on your fitness plan, you can either pick up where you left off or start all over again. Either way, you’ll get back on the right track:
Don’t expect too much from yourself.
Adjusting your expectations may be the most important thing. Your body may no longer be able to perform as usual – especially if you were an experienced athlete – and that’s completely okay. It may be daunting, but you will quickly regain your old skills. Set smaller, realistic goals and don’t overwhelm yourself. For example, decide to spend less time on your workouts, do fewer sets and reps, or go to the gym one fewer day per week. You can change this later!
Keep it simple!
It can be intimidating to go back to previous, more extensive training sessions. Therefore, start with simple exercises. Try reducing the number of reps you do and doing shorter workouts a few times a week and see how you feel. The sense of achievement, no matter how small, will help you build the momentum you need to get back on track.
Be nicer to yourself one step at a time.
Progress is messy – it won’t be a straight line. You may encounter obstacles, be it unachieved goals, body aches, or just feeling overloaded. Breathe and think about your new goals. Go back to shorter, less intense workouts and keep going. Be your own cheerleader! How we talk to ourselves influences our mood and behavior more than we realize. Remind yourself to train again – even if you feel like you’re not doing enough! – is better than not training at all.
