Tokyo Stylez: Pushing the Art of Hair Beyond Imagination

When it comes to redefining boundaries in the beauty industry, few names resonate as powerfully as Tokyo Stylez. From crafting unforgettable Halloween looks for Beyoncé, including her stunning recreations of Lil’ Kim and Cardi B, to solidifying her place as a trendsetting force, Tokyo continues to elevate hair artistry to levels most can only dream of.

One of my most unforgettable moments was working with Beyoncé for Halloween. Those recreations weren’t just about the hair; they were about capturing the essence of Lil’ Kim and Cardi B in the ‘WAP’ and ‘Up’ videos,” Tokyo shares. “It’s all about merging references and crafting timeless moments that celebrate identity while pushing creative limits.

Tokyo’s journey to becoming one of the most revered hairstylists of our time is a story of resilience, rebellion, and relentless passion. Starting her career at the tender age of nine, Tokyo’s fascination with hair has always been fueled by her unyielding imagination. Now, decades later, she’s an OG in the game, inspiring legions of up-and-coming stylists and earning the flowers she worked tirelessly to cultivate.

I like to go over the top while still keeping the identity of each client,” she explains. “There’s a lot of reference pulling and mood boards involved to create signature looks. But, at the end of the day, the most timeless designs often become the most iconic.”

From Behind the Chair to Industry Icon

Over the years, Tokyo has transformed from a hairstylist behind the chair to a global icon of creativity and innovation. Reflecting on this evolution, she says, “It’s been a journey. Now, I’m getting the flowers and respect I’ve worked so hard for. To be regarded as one of the best in the game is humbling, but it’s also a challenge to keep elevating and producing art that breaks boundaries.

Hair as Art and Inspiration Everywhere

For Tokyo, hair isn’t just a profession; it’s a profound art form. “As an artist and creator, I find inspiration in the unexpected. A mangled water bottle, for instance, might inspire me with its structure and texture,” she reveals. “It’s about connecting the dots between everyday objects and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in beauty.

Her rebellious “rockstar” spirit infuses her work with daring creativity. Yet, she’s equally committed to staying grounded in her craft. “Hair and wigs are evolving every day. There are new techniques and trends emerging constantly. With the future of technology, I’m excited to see how far we can take things.”

On Staying Hungry and Breaking Rules

Tokyo’s advice to aspiring stylists is simple but powerful: “Never stop dreaming. If you can envision it, it’s possible. Don’t be afraid to take risks and break rules. People told me I couldn’t—so I had no choice but to show them I could. And always stay hungry, because someone else is out there putting in overtime to take your crown.

A Moment for Hype Hair and Representation

Appearing on the December 2024 cover of Hype Hair Magazine is a full-circle moment for Tokyo. “I’ve been a fan of Hype Hair since I started doing hair at nine years old. To be on the cover now is surreal,” she reflects. “It’s a moment that will be remembered forever and a testament to hairstylists deserving recognition beyond the chair.”

Tokyo’s admiration for Hype Hair stems from its role as a beacon of representation. “Hype Hair is what African American hair is all about. It celebrates the beauty and diversity of women of color and the styles we wear. That’s exactly how I want my clients to feel: strong, Black, and beautiful.

Dream Clients and Timeless Beauty

When asked about dream clients, Tokyo’s response reveals her deep appreciation for timeless beauty. “Aaliyah would definitely be one. Her soft, timeless beauty balanced with edgy fashion was perfect. I would have loved to see her in a bold bob or pixie that highlighted her face and complemented her style.

The Future of Hair

As Tokyo looks to the future, her curiosity and drive remain undiminished. “With technology advancing, I’m excited to see how hair will evolve. Every day brings new trends and techniques, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

In her own words, Tokyo Stylez is more than a hairstylist; she’s an artist, innovator, and storyteller. From creating iconic looks for some of the world’s biggest stars to inspiring the next generation of beauty professionals, Tokyo continues to prove that the art of hair knows no bounds. And as she graces the cover of Hype Hair, she reminds us all to dream big, take risks, and never stop creating.
