Moro Exmouth Market London – Tiny Urban Kitchen

Moro London (Moorish cuisine)

It was early spring, right before dinner time, and Exmouth Market was jam packed with people enjoying the crisp weather while grabbing a drink outside. Nestled within this energetic and vibrant street sits Moro, a lovely, Moorish restaurant serving homemade flatbread, mezzes, fresh salads, meat dishes, sherry tastings, and much, much more.

I actually visited this place twice. Once for lunch with Bryan, and once for dinner for a business meeting. Both times, the place was packed (you can’t tell from the photo below because I came right when it opened!).

It’s quite clear there are a lot of regulars that come. We saw the owner? give guests hugs and say hello. It’s a happy place full of sunshine during the day and lots of laughter at night. The Michelin Guide has also written about this restaurant in its guide.

Lunch

Both Bryan and I loved this salad. Although it looks simple – just fresh celery, capers, and lemon zest & juice – it was beautifully refreshing, with just the right amount of acid and salt.

If you like trying a bunch of different small tastes, then highly recommend the Mixed Vegetable Mezze. It’s listed as an entree, but the server said that it’s a popular sharing appetizer as well. Enjoy their house made flatbread with baba ghanoush, beetroot borani, potatoes, peas and anise, spiced labneh, hispi cabbage, dukkah, lentil bulgur puree, beetroot and walnut salad, and crudites. Bryan ordered the Lamb, pistachio, and roasted beets as his entree. Unfortunately, the Moorish flavors weren’t really his thing, so he wasn’t a huge fan. I thought it was OK, but then I’m not a huge fan of lamb, so it’s not something I would have personally ordered.

Ha ha, Bryan had no idea the diner next to him was a bit amused (confused?) at what he was doing.

Mezzes from the Bar

There is a bar menu that has a lot of fun little mezzes (small plates) that are supposedly only available to people sitting at the bar. Our server told us that if we really wanted some stuff she would let us order some.

How fun! We enjoyed the mezzes so much. My dining companions especially enjoyed the patatas bravas. I’ve always been a huge fan of Marcona almonds, and the baba ghanoush was great too. Shishito peppers were solid, similar to ones I’ve had elsewhere.

Dinner

I was surprised at how tasty the oven-roasted phyllo wrapped chicken was! The paper thin phyllo remained crispy, while the chicken inside was hearty and delicious. It came with a side of mashed pumpkin and plenty of Marcona almonds. Overall, the food was excellent, and I was so sad that we were all too stuffed to finish the chicken (because it really was so tasty). If only I could have taken it back with me . . . (but alas, no kitchen in the hotel!)

Drinks

Moro London (Moorish cuisine)
Moro had a fun tasting of 3 sherrys that you could try. Bryan loves sherry, so he was excited to taste three very different types. Check out the difference in color alone! On a side note, aside from the flatbread, their normal bread with olive oil is also fantastic! I couldn’t stop eating it!

What a beautiful way to end the meal! I was delighted when the huge pot of mint tea was put in front of me. I usually can’t drink coffee at night, so I often say no to the “tea or coffee” option at the end of the night. I’m so glad I got the mint tea this time! It was so refreshing, I really might try this at home!

Moro Exmouth Market London – Thoughts

It’s rare I go to a restaurant twice during a weeklong trip, but I came to Moro twice. If I were go to back, I would absolutely get the bread, celery salad, mixed vegetable mezze plate, and the chicken! Those were my favorite dishes, but most of the other dishes were quite nice as well. I can certainly see why people love this place. Best part is that you can wander around the Exmouth Market area before or after the meal.
