The magic of sweetened condensed milk! Not only does it make amazing condensed milk cookies, slow cooker caramel, creamy lemon slice, coconut ice and all sorts of fudge, but it also creates a delicious caramelised topping for this slice, just by being poured over the top of the other ingredients and then baked. It’s SO good!

Ingredients needed to make the slice weighed out and placed in individual bowls.Ingredients needed to make the slice weighed out and placed in individual bowls.
  • Plain sweet biscuits – crushed. Use a plain sweet biscuit such as Arnotts Marie or Nice biscuits in Australia, Graham Crackers in the US, or Digestive Biscuits or Rich Tea in the UK.
  • Butter – melted . You can use either unsalted butter or salted butter in this recipe.
  • Chocolate chips – I prefer to use milk chocolate chips, however dark or white chocolate chips are both equally as delicious in this slice.
  • Coconut – you can use either desiccated coconut or shredded coconut depending on what texture you prefer, or what you have on hand. Use unsweetened coconut.
  • Dried cranberries – or substitute with sultanas, dried apricots or currants.
  • Slivered almonds – these are almonds that have been sliced into little stick-like pieces.
  • Sweetened condensed milk – use full-fat sweetened condensed milk (not skim condensed milk as this doesn’t set as well). I use Nestle sweetened condensed milk, however any brand is fine to use in this magic slice recipe.

Equipment Required

A crushed biscuit base, layered with delicious toppings makes this magic slice a popular treat.

  • Food processor or Thermomix – to crush the biscuits, alternatively you can use a rolling pin.
  • Large mixing bowl – for mixing the biscuit base in.
  • Baking tin – 20cm (8 inch) square baking tin. Greased and lined with baking paper.
  • Oven – I use a fan-forced oven. If you use a conventional oven, increase the temperature by 10-20 degrees Celsius.

Expert Tips

  • Line your baking tin – line your baking tin with baking paper to prevent magic slice from sticking to the tin and to allow for easy removal.
  • If you notice that the slice is browning too quickly – place a sheet of foil loosely over the top and continue baking.
  • Mix & match – use any of your favourite nuts or dried fruit! (see my FAQs below).
  • If you’d like a thinner slice – use an 18cm x 28cm (7″ x 11″ ) slice tin (personally I like the slice thickness by using a smaller square tin!)
  • Chill in the fridge until firm – this will help to cut the slice neatly. If you try to cut magic slice whilst warm it can get a little messy. Have a look at my how to cut perfect slices post for more hints and tips on cutting a slice neatly.
