Do you ever wonder how to start healing the past and stop letting it define your future? If your past has been tough, it can feel overwhelming to move forward, but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Most of us have been through experiences that left a mark on us, often changing who we are in ways we didn’t even realize. As time passes, we might not fully grasp just how much those past events have shaped us.
Imagine if a particular event had never happened—how different would your life be? Who would you be today? I know that for me, certain experiences truly changed me, for better or worse. Some lessons were positive, even from difficult times, but others left scars that needed healing.

How to start healing the past and redefine your future
One of the first steps in healing the past is acknowledging how your experiences have shaped you. Reflect on your past and ask yourself: How did these experiences affect me? How are they still affecting me? This reflection is crucial in beginning your healing journey.
Remember, those past experiences don’t define who you are now. Forgiving yourself (and others) can be a powerful step toward letting go. You can’t change the past, but you can decide how it will influence your future.
The present moment is where you hold true power. By focusing on the “now,” you can reshape your tomorrow. It’s empowering to realize that your actions today can change your life’s direction.
You are not a sum of your past and your past experiences. You are you – the same beautiful, loved, abundant, complete spirit that came here from a divine place to inhabit this body. And, all you have to do is find that spirit within you. -alb
My self love journal includes reminders to love yourself and remember your worthiness. It’s very empowering! It has places for journaling and writing affirmations and is available on Amazon.
Focus on the present moment to heal and move forward
The weight of the past can be heavy, but understanding that you have the power to change at any time can be life-altering. This shift in perspective allows you to move from feeling like a victim of circumstance to recognizing the opportunities and choices available to you.
Don’t let your past define your future. Those were simply experiences—lessons learned—that don’t have to continue holding you back. Instead, focus on the present moment, where your future is being crafted.
Practical tips for healing the past
Here are five practical tips for healing the past (I especially like number three).
- Reflect and Identify: Take time to reflect on how specific events have shaped you. Journaling can be a helpful tool to bring clarity.
- Forgive and Let Go: Holding onto grudges or guilt ties you to the past. Practice forgiveness to free yourself.
- Live in the Now: Practice mindfulness and focus on the present moment. It’s the only time you have real control over.
- Seek Support: Healing can be challenging. Reach out to a therapist or join support groups if needed.
- Celebrate Small Wins: Healing is a journey. Celebrate each small step forward.
Do not waste one moment in regret, for to think feelingly of the mistakes of the past is to re-infect yourself. -Neville Goddard

Your self-growth journey: The path to peace and happiness
Healing the past is part of your self-growth journey, and it’s worth every effort. As you let go of what no longer serves you, you’ll find more peace, happiness, and freedom in your life.
Embrace the present moment, and remember that each day is an opportunity to grow and redefine who you want to be. Knowing your value and believing in yourself are key to moving forward.
A personal note from the author…
One last thing. I want to make sure you really know your value and worth, because it’s important and affects a lot.
For much of my life I didn’t know how worthy or valuable I was. I thought I had confidence because I knew I was pretty enough, but I didn’t really love and value myself. I didn’t know my true worth.
It took me going on a self growth journey within to see that I was lacking these very important things. I had to look at things from the past that really hurt me and even stop making excuses for the people around me. I also decided that I would no longer be anyone’s victim, and that I would be empowered instead.
I became empowered by realizing who I really am. Not what other’s around me acted like I was, not what I was taught to believe that I was. Not stupid, or crazy, or not good enough to fit in. No. I realized my true worth and that I am more than enough at all times. And so are you! Believe it and know it. You come from a divine source that loves you more than you can imagine, and you are always connected to that source. If you ever feel lonely or misunderstood, remember this.
