  • Milk chocolate—This is one of those recipes where chocolate is the ‘star’, so choose a good quality chocolate for the best chocolate spiders. I’ve used Cadbury’s baking melts here. You can substitute the milk chocolate for dark chocolate or white chocolate if you prefer.
  • Peanut butteruse store-bought peanut butter. This works better than homemade peanut butter, as it’s creamier. You can use either smooth or crunchy peanut butter; however, I prefer crunchy peanut butter for the extra texture and crunch!
  • Fried noodles – I always have a packet of Chang’s fried noodles in the cupboard as they’re cheap and so versatile in many recipes.

Equipment Required

Any recipe that has only a few dishes to wash up is always a hit, right?!

  • Microwave and microwave-safe bowl.
  • Baking tray, baking sheet or large plate – lined with baking paper/parchment paper/wax paper.
  • Fridge – to chill the spiders.

Expert Tips

  • Choose a good brand of chocolate – the better quality the chocolate, the better your spiders will taste. I use a good quality brand like Cadbury’s milk chocolate baking melts, as they are specifically designed for melting.
  • Melting chocolateMicrowaving in short bursts at half power is the best way to melt chocolate, as it allows you to control it and ensure it heats only enough to produce a smooth, silky result. Alternatively, you can melt chocolate in a bowl over a saucepan of boiling water or in a double boiler. See FAQs.
  • I used Chang’s fried noodles in this recipe, but you can use any fried noodles you like.
  • Use a creamy store-bought peanut butter (crunchy or smooth). Avoid homemade or natural peanut butter, as the texture is not as creamy.
  • Storing – chocolate spiders can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

FAQs

Can chocolate spiders be made ahead and frozen?

Chocolate spiders can be made ahead and either stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week or frozen in an airtight container for up to one month. If frozen, place the the container in the fridge to defrost before serving.

What’s the best way to melt chocolate?

The best way to melt chocolate is gently and slowly to avoid burning or seizing. Using a double boiler (a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water) or microwaving on low heat in short bursts, stirring in between, will give you smooth, glossy melted chocolate every time.

What causes chocolate to seize?

Chocolate seizes when moisture or steam touches melted chocolate, making it thick, grainy, and unworkable. Overheating can also cause it to become dry and lumpy. To prevent this, melt chocolate gently and keep utensils completely dry. If it does seize, try stirring in a little warm liquid, like cream or melted butter, to bring it back to a smooth consistency.
