What is coastal grandma style?
Coastal grandma is all about timeless elegance, neutral nautical colours and embracing different fabrics and natural materials.
Coastal grandma first started as a fashion aesthetic — we’re talking cream cashmere, white linen trousers, an oversized crisp blue shirt. Basically anything you wouldn’t want to eat tomato spaghetti in without some stain remover on hand.
But it quickly evolved into a lifestyle trend, stretching into influencing our interiors. Most of the inspiration online is around the US East Coast from the Hamptons to Maine, as well as Los Angeles. But here in the UK we aren’t blessed with sunny weather all year round, so it’s the perfect way to level up your kitchen for spring and summer.

Rosie Birkett’s kitchen
Rosie Birkett is a recipe writer, cookbook author and stylist who lives on the Kent coast. The space is flooded with natural light, and makes use of natural materials to make it feel grounded.
She says: ‘The style is classic shaker cabinetry with raw plaster walls and marble floor tiles. There are antiqued brass fixtures and modern flourishes, and I’ve taken inspiration from European travels across Italy and France.’
Hollie Newton’s kitchen
This light and airy kitchen belongs to Hollie Newton, screenwriter, creative director, gardener and cook. Newton lives by the sea in Poole, Dorset and the kitchen contains lots of nautical details like the backsplash tiles.
‘The link between the garden and kitchen is important, as I grow a lot of food in the raised beds and greenhouse,’ she says. ‘There’s nothing nicer than picking ingredients for dinner. Bespoke bookshelves house cookbooks, but my design master stroke was to hide the larder and utilities behind a sliding door – it’s disguised easily.’
