Chilly Water Farm – When Quality Matters, Eat Beef Raised Right

1

Situated on 325 acres along the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Chilly Water Farm in Sparta, NC has brought to life a dream Sara Davis declared to her parents years ago – to be a farmer!

Sara’s mother, Kim Brown, now joins her daughter in leading and growing this woman-owned, full-fledged farming operation and lovingly works to establish a shared ideal scenario of true organic farming.

Originally from the eastern part of North Carolina, the family found themselves residing in Winston-Salem while husband and father Ricky was a BB&T executive. Somewhere along the way, while making Winston-Salem their home, Sara began to seriously pursue her farming goals, spending a year studying organic farming at Maggie’s Farm in Massachusetts.

The dream, along with Kim and Sara’s enthusiasm for delivering the highest quality product, continues to grow and gather loyal customers!

“We had owned houses but never a lot of land,” shares Kim. “We started with a 52-acre Christmas tree farm that turned out to be the perfect location – it was easy for Ricky to travel back and forth to Winston-Salem for work.”

Kim and Sara began selling beef from that location in 2012 – naming it Chilly Water Farm to pay tribute to Sara’s favorite song by Widespread Panic. To start off, they only had smaller Dexter cows.

“Once we realized it took the same energy to raise a small cow as it does larger cows, we began to introduce our Angus,” adds Kim. “Now, we have mostly Angus and just a few Dexter.”

The mother-daughter duo was joined by Kim’s sister, Lynn, in 2014, and all are completely focused on following the entire organic process, yielding 100% grass-fed cattle – with absolutely no hormones or antibiotics. Their beef is processed at Mays Meats in Taylorsville, NC, a USDA-approved facility in operation for more than 30 years. Chilly Water Farm beef can be found in one restaurant in the Sparta area as well as at a local meat market and one nearby country club.

The beauty of supporting local farmers means you know exactly where your meat and eggs were raised!

“We also have regular Winston-Salem customers, and we currently deliver to Winston-Salem once a month which we’re hoping to expand on,” says Kim. “Customers who are more local to the farm will email their order, and we leave it for them in a cooler. As far as pick-up is concerned, we can do whatever works best for the customer!”

The family owned farm is totally dedicated to delivering the highest quality beef around. You’ll likely hear Kim say the best phrase of all: “Our cattle are raised with love and respect!”

“Every steak cut we have is ground into our steak burgers,” she explains. “Those burgers are amazing for spaghetti, meat loaf, tacos and anything you can think of, especially for grilling – with very, very little grease! We also sell meaty soup bones, short ribs and stew beef when available.”

Around the farm, you’ll also see miniature donkeys and a goat herd that make amazing pets and delight visitors every day, as well as chickens who are living the good life thanks to natural feed, fresh vegetables and fruit snacks. Naturally, they also produce excellent quality eggs!

While you’re here picking up an order and feeling the vibe, grab a Get Chillerized t-shirt from the farm and carry on their “state of peace and harmony with a dash of cool!”
