Antonio Macau Taipa – Tiny Urban Kitchen

Antonio Macau Taipa

Antonio Macau is a well established Portuguese restaurant located in a really cute, walkable area of Taipa. If you’re staying near the casinos, it’s about a 10-15 minute walk along a (mostly) shaded path to Taipa Village area.

We had just arrived in Macau from Hong Kong, having taken the 1-hour boat ride in the morning. It was pretty hot and humid outside, but we managed to survive the walk to the restaurant. Our friend had never been to Macau before, so we opted to eat cuisines that are more unique to Macau, like Portuguese food!

Antonio is cozy, and little touches like the Portuguese tiles and European style paintings make you feel like you might actually be in Portugal.

The Food

Antonio Macau Taipa

Salada Mista “À Portuguesa” We began with a refreshing Portuguese-style mixed salad, which included lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrots, onions and olives tossed in a vinaigrette. It was pretty simple and basic, made with fresh ingredients.

Bryan ordered this Bacalhau à Bras and I’m SO GLAD he did. We all fell in love with this dish. This cake, which was made of fried salt cod, fried onions, “Allumette” potatoes, and eggs was so incredibly flavorful that it was actually a bit addictive.

Espinafres cozidos ou salteados com azeite e alho
A side of spinach (“steamed or sautéed” – we opted for sauté) in Portuguese olive oil and garlic was simple, flavorful, and well executed.

Bryan absolutely loves duck, and so does my friend, so we ordered Arroz de Pato à Portuguesa , a Portuguese duck rice “paella” served with pork sausage. They specifically import duck from Portugal to make this dish. I loved the crispy bits (socarrat) at the bottom and edges.

The server recommended we try this African chicken dish, Galinha à Africana com Batata Gratinada, if we wanted to try something that we normally wouldn’t find. It was super flavorful and quite tasty. The chicken is smothered in a very flavorful sauce made with peanut, coconut, and a number of other spices. On the side was “Gratinated Potatoes”, layers of potato and cheese baked until the cheese is charred at the top.

General Thoughts – Antonio Macau

I thought coming here was a lovely way to start our Macau trip. I liked how it was walkable from the casinos (especially if the weather is not too hot). The ambiance is pleasant, the food is very good, and I like how they have more unusual dishes that I wouldn’t find as easily in Hong Kong or other parts of Asia.
