Healthywomen declaration on HHS recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy
Healthywomen shares the concerns of the American College of Obstricians and Gynecologists and other medical associations about the health and security of pregnancy carriers and newborns in the United States According to the recent announcement that the US Ministry of Health and Human Services (HHS) will no longer recommend COVID-19-vaccination. This decision can have a significant impact on how pregnant people in healthcare make decisions and undermines their ability to make sound decisions for themselves and their families.
Covid-19 remains a serious threat. If you receive a COVID-19 infection during pregnancy, patients in their early weeks of life are dependent on a higher risk of serious diseases for protection on maternal antibodies for protection. The removal of this recommendation creates confusion, despite clear and constant scientific evidence of the security and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy.
This abrupt removal from the defined guidelines can lead to people avoiding vaccination due to changes in insurance coverage or losing access to the vaccine – a particularly worrying result for those who are already confronted with health differences.
Science has not changed. A COVID-19 infection during pregnancy can be catastrophic, and vaccines are proven protection. This shift in the guidelines undermines confidence in vaccination at a time when trust and access are of essential importance.
Healthywomen calls on HHS to reverse this decision and to protect evidence -based instructions that protect the health of pregnant people, newborns and their families.
