Amy Schumer Says Ozempic Made Her “So Sick.” Here’s Why

Amy Schumer has never been one to hold back and her latest interview with Howard Stern was no exception. The comedian recently got candid about her experience with the popular weight-loss drug Ozempic. She revealed in an interview on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show that an underlying medical condition made the side effects unbearable.

Schumer’s Ozempic Experience

Schumer shared that she unknowingly suffered from hyperemesis, a condition marked by extreme nausea and vomiting. This condition is commonly associated with pregnancy but can affect individuals in other circumstances. When she tried Ozempic, a GLP-1 medication known for aiding in weight loss and reducing inflammation, her symptoms were amplified. “I have this gene— GDF15–which makes you extremely prone to nausea, which is why I was so sick during my pregnancy,” she told Stern.

The comedian previously shared that she has endometriosis, a condition that can cause severe pain, inflammation and digestive issues. She revealed last year that she had tried the weight-loss drug but said it made her feel “horrible” and “too skinny.” Now, she believes her body’s reaction may have been linked to her condition.

“I was so sick. I couldn’t function,” she went on to say about her GLP-1 experience. She then explained that her body’s response to the drug went beyond typical side effects.

Common GLP-1 Side Effects

Nausea is one of the most common complaints among GLP-1 users. For those with pre-existing conditions, side effects can be more intense. While some users report mild queasiness that improves over time, those prone to severe gastrointestinal issues, chronic nausea or hyperemesis may struggle to tolerate the drug. Many experts say if a patient has a history of extreme nausea, alternative approaches may be helpful. Some of these approaches include adjusting the dosage or managing symptoms with anti-nausea medications.

While many celebrities have embraced GLP-1s, Schumer ultimately decided it wasn’t for her. “I was one of those people that felt sick, and it wasn’t worth it,” she explained. Now, she says she’s prioritizing other methods of health and wellness that work better for her body.
