Recipe Details

I love this very simply recipe because it takes the mild flavor of the mushrooms and really dials it up with fresh garlic. The air fryer is quick and easy, giving a scrumptious texture to this veggie. You’ll love serving this dish to family and friends.

  • TASTE: These mushrooms are savory and earthy with the delicious flavor of fresh garlic. This will complement any dish it’s paired with.
  • TEXTURE: Baby Bella mushrooms are very “meaty” and have lots of great chew. They’re given a nice crispness on the outside by the air fryer.
  • TIME: This recipe will take 18 minutes.
  • EASE: It’s really easy to prepare this side dish. The air fryer does all the work.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients for Air Fryer Mushrooms: Baby Bella mushrooms, olive il, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and garlic clove.

Ingredients Notes

  • Mushrooms- I used Baby Bella mushrooms because they are very firm and hold up well. I also like the flavor of them, but you can use any type you like.
  • Oil- I used olive oil, but any type will do. This helps the seasonings stick to the mushrooms.
  • Fresh garlic- While we are using garlic powder, nothing beats the flavor and aroma of freshly pressed garlic.

Add-ins and Substitutions

  • Substitute the mushrooms- You can also make this recipe with white button mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, or shiitake mushrooms. Just keep in mind that cook times may vary.
  • Add balsamic vinegar- Tossing the mushrooms in balsamic vinegar will allow it to caramelize while they cook, giving them a sweet and tangy finish.
  • Give it an Asian twist- You can make these Air Fryer Mushrooms with soy sauce, ginger, and sesame oil for an Asian inspired dish.
  • Add a fresh citrusy flavor- Toss them in lemon juice and Italian seasoning for a delicious and bright flavor profile.

How to Make Air Fryer Mushrooms

  • Clean and trim the mushrooms. Clean the mushrooms using a lightly damp paper towel. Then trim a few centimeters off the ends and slice the mushrooms in halves.
  • Toss them with seasonings. Add the mushrooms to a large bowl and combine them with olive oil, pressed garlic, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Pro Tip: I find it easiest to combine the seasonings, oil, and mushrooms with clean hands. It’s faster and more thorough.

Steps to make Air Fryer Mushrooms: toss the mushrooms with oil, salt, pepper, and pressed garlic.
  • Cook. Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees and cook the seasoned mushrooms in a single layer for about 5 minutes.
  • Shake and finish cooking. Give it a good shake and cook for another 5-8 minutes. Once the mushrooms are cooked, garnish with some fresh parsley (optional) and serve warm.
Steps to make Air Fryer Mushrooms: place the seasoned mushrooms in the air fryer basket and fry them.

Recipe Tips

  • Pat the mushrooms dry- Doing this makes it easier for the oil and seasonings to stick to the mushrooms.
  • Preheat the air fryer- If the temp is too low, the mushrooms will steam, losing that crisp outer layer. So make sure it is at the correct temperature before adding the mushrooms.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket- To avoid undercooking the air fryer mushrooms, place them in a single layer in the basket so the hot air can circulate easily.
  • Do them in batches- You may want to cook in 2 separate batches depending on the size of your air fryer so that they lay in a single layer.

FAQs

Should you soak mushrooms before frying?

You don’t have to soak the mushrooms before you air fry them, but it helps to wipe them off and get any dirt off of them. Pat them dry when you’re done so the oil is not repelled by the water on them.

Is it better to cook mushrooms in butter or oil?

Whether you cook the mushrooms in butter or oil is a matter of personal preference. Both ingredients do the job of helping the mushrooms to get crisp and brown as they cook, so either one is fine.
