Happy 14th Birthday, Rebellious!

11

Y’all, I can’t thank you enough for making Lucky 13 our most successful fundraising campaign evahhhhhh! You gave gifts large and small, you cheered on our incredible staff and you put your money where your “hell yeah” is. As a founder from increasingly marginalized communities in an increasingly embattled industry, your support means everything. Thank you!

We haven’t hit our $13,000 goal — yet — so we’re going to keep this party going until we do.

As we enter our 14th year, I’m struck once again by how vital it still is that women, LGBTQ+ folks and our allies in feminism remain Rebellious AF. I’m heartened by every reader who tells us they’re inspired and encouraged by our work, and I’m humbled by the dedication of this team.

And we have some team changes to announce! Princess McDowell is now our Managing Editor, and Janet Arvia is our Arts and Leisure Editor. These shifts reflect the expansion of the work these two do. Please join me in congratulating them!

And join me in shouting out their incomparable colleagues: Laurie Fanelli for her stunning live music and comedy coverage, truth-teller Michelle Duster for her column, Centering Ourselves, and multi-hyphenate and hype woman to the stars Onicia Muller. Behind the scenes, Social Media Director (and the world’s best older sister) Valerie Hawkins engages with all of you on Facebook, Bluesky, Spoutible, Threads, X/Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. (I’m the one tinkering around on YouTube — please Subscribe if you haven’t already!) If you’re also not OK, Of Course I’m Not OK podcast co-host Katie Morell and I talk about it on wherever you get your podcasts and on YouTube.

In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting a group of entrepreneurs that have fostered community and growth across the country and a rebellious dancer who’s debuting her art today ahead of an international tour. I’m super stoked to feature Let’s Talk Womxn and Guggenheim Fellow Nejla Yatkin, and I know you’ll enjoy them too.

We are Chicago’s favorite feminist magazine, and we wouldn’t be here without you. We hope we continue to inspire and empower you to be even more Rebellious at a time when the world wants to silence and intimidate us. Not on our watch, mofos.

Stay Rebellious,
Karen
