How To Style Silk Shorts | A Fall Mini-Capsule With 10 Real-Life Outfits

52

Remember when I said capsule wardrobes are boring? Haha – I still think that’s true. But a mini-capsule? That’s a whole different story.

If you missed my last post – Capsule Wardrobes Are Boring (Here’s How To Make Them Work) – I basically made the case for ignoring most capsule rules. The exception? When I buy something new (especially something slightly impractical), I build a tiny capsule around it. It’s my way of figuring out how to make that new thing actually work in real life. It’s the best way I’ve found to make better use out of my existing wardrobe, be more strategic with new purchases, and still have fun with fashion.

This time, my “new thing” was Reformation’s lace-trimmed satin shorts. They’re a little vintage-inspired, a tiiiiny bit sexy, and honestly surprised me with how wearable they turned out to be. So I built a mini-capsule wardrobe around them – the cozy knits, sneakers, flats, and oversized tops that make these ‘night-out’ shorts work for day.

These shorts are also incredibly comfortable – the elastic waistband doesn’t squeeze, and I’ve been wearing these shorts – multiple times a week – since August.

Reformation’s Silk Shorts: My Mini Capsule Wardrobe For Fall

This is the little capsule wardrobe I built around the shorts. These are the pieces that, after a bunch of trial-and-error, were the pieces that made these shorts wearable (and honestly…surprisingly versatile), with outfits that felt the most me.

You’ll see these same pieces popping up in the outfit photos below – this capsule was my starting point for every look.

10 Styled Outfits From My Fall Mini-Capsule

Once I had figured out – in general – the kinds of pieces I liked to pair with these shorts (think: oversized tops), it was easy to start making outfits. These lace-trimmed satin shorts have been in near-constant rotation since – an unlikely closet hero.

1. Coffee Run, But Make It Fancy

The Formula: Oversized hoodie + ballet flats

Silk shorts outfit with oversized hoodie and ballet flats — casual fall look

hoodie (s) | shorts (m) | flats | bag | ring (available for Discord pre-order!)

An oversized sweatshirt tones down the shorts, while the ballet flats act as a bridge between the two pieces. The overall effect is chill but pulled-together. This is my most-often worn combo.

NOTE: This hoodie is my FAVORITE. It only shows up in the men’s section, but the brand itself is unisex. In fact, the reviews on this hoodie – from guys – are hilarious: they’re mad it’s such a cute, boxy shape (their loss, haha). Also, this bag is ridiculously useful – I use it to tote groceries in a pinch, carry my stuff to the gym, and yet it’s functions as a “real” fashion bag, too. It’s also 100% cotton and from a mom-owned small business. Last I checked, we sold out, like immediately, but a restock is coming!! So if interested, sign up to be notified when back in stock.

2. Weekend Errands, Unexpectedly Cute

The Formula: Oversized Tee + Sneakerinas + Bomber Jacket

Fall outfit idea with silk shorts, canvas jacket, sneakerinas, and oversized tee.

I love these lightweight jackets – I have some that are more bomber-like, and some that are more of a canvas track jacket (I have this exact one, but Aritzia has a really chic, clean-lined one, too) – and either way, they’re the right mix of casual/dressy for these shorts.

And while an oversized tee is decidedly casual (some may say sloppy, I do not care)…sneakerinas (sneaker ballet flats) are such a good bridge.

3. Cozy Sunday Energy

The Formula: Oversized Tee + Short, Boxy Grandpa Cardigan + Sexy Mesh Flats

Cozy fall outfit with silk shorts, boxy cashmere cardigan, and mesh flats.

cardigan (s) | tee (s) | shorts (m) | ballet flats (other colors) | similar ballet flats | similar bag | ring stack: one, two (both size 7) | necklace – coming soon!

It turns out that I love these shorts with any and all slouchy cashmere sweaters. And while I’m typically a cardigan-hater…things are changing. Especially when the cardigan in question is this freaking good (yup: it’s Jenni Kayne). Fancy shoes and a little bit of statement-y jewelry keep this look intentional.

4. The “Didn’t Try” Outfit That Works

The Formula: Oversized Tee + Sexy Mesh Flats + Statement Jewelry

Graphic tee and silk shorts outfit with mesh flats and statement jewelry from small-businesses.

tee (s) | shorts (m) | ballet flats (other colors) | similar ballet flats | similar bag | necklace | earrings | ring (available for Discord pre-order)

These Damen Madder tees are my current favorites – I love the offbeat, quirky graphics & oversized shape. But the big winner? The jewelry. Each piece is, arguably, a statement piece, but they all have a casualness to them, which is why these pieces work so well together (and work so well with outfits like this). I’ve been wearing this exact combo a ton.

NOTE: I’m 5’3″ and do realize that this t-shirt should be taken up 2″. It’s on my list to take it to the tailor (yes, I’m not above hemming a really good tee) but then…I keep wearing it, haha. Eventually, tho.

5. The “Accessories Matters” Outfit

The Formula: Oversized Tee + Sneakers + Statement Jewelry + Cool bag

Silk shorts with sneakers and statement jewelry — casual fall look.

tee (4) | shorts (m) | sneakers | similar bag | necklace | ring (available for Discord pre-order)

This is basically the same t-shirt outfit as #4, but with a twist. I swapped out the ballet flats for some fall-ready sneakers, and added a richer-toned bag. Still doing statement jewelry, but am relying on more of a statement necklace this time (especially a vintage one that is said to bring good luck and protection, haha).

6. City Girl Moment

The Formula: Oversized Cashmere Sweater & Tee layers + Leopard Sneakers + Statement Necklace

Silk shorts outfit with oversized sweater and leopard sneakers.

sweater (s) | tee (s) | shorts (m) | sneakers | similar bag | necklace | earrings (an everyday team fav)

Man, I’m really loving darker sneakers for fall – especially in these richer colors or patterns. There’s something about it that just gives all my outfits a little edge. Once again, I’m relying on a statement shoe + jewelry combo to make this slouchy look feel more intentional (especially with my messy bun).

7. Easy Night Out Look

The Formula: Oversized Cashmere Sweater + Loose Silk Top + Statement Flats + Denim Bag

sweater (s) | shorts (m) | ballet flats | bag

This outfit was so easy and fun – one I’ll definitely be repeating, especially for the holidays! The outer layer was my usual oversized cashmere sweater (it’s honestly just Quince), but once inside, I was wearing Jenni Kayne’s epic silk blouse (literally one of my all-time favorite pieces from that brand), untucked. Silk-on-silk always works, even (and/or especially) a little oversized.

8. Weekend Errands, Unexpectedly Cute

The Formula: Rugby Shirt + Sexy Mesh Flats + Leather Bomber

Fall mini-capsule outfit with silk shorts, rugby shirt, and leather bomber jacket.

jacket (xs) – similar here (but size wayyy up) | rugby shirt | shorts (m) | ballet flats | similar bag

I’ve tried on a ton of different jackets with these shorts, and what seems to work the best is a shortish, oversized jacket: could be an oversized denim jacket, canvas jacket, that short Barbour I love or – in this case – my old leather bomber from Ref.

I also love how the preppy rugby plays into the sporty + silky combo (one of the outfit formulas we covered in our Fall Style Playbook). Easy and cute.

9. Dinner Out, Still Comfortable

The Formula: Slouchy Stripes + Ballet Flats

sweater | shorts (m) | ballet flats | similar bag | ring (available for Discord pre-order)

I will forever love a good black + brown moment, and this combo is one of my favorites. Our date nights usually involve walking to the restaurant, so comfy shoes are key. (And dang, that darn ring looks good with everything.)

Since this is one of my favorite ways to wear these shorts, I wanted to warm it up a bit: enter moto boots.

jacket (xs) – similar here (but size wayyy up) | sweater | shorts (m) | moto boots | similar bag | ring (available for Discord pre-order)

I will definitely add tights once the weather gets colder! And in case you’re wondering, any sort of tall boot works with these shorts – I just happen to like the look of a casual one.

10. Office(ish) Vibes

The Formula: Oversized Button-Up + Sneakerinas

Silk shorts styled with oversized button-up and sneakers — casual office outfit.

similar top | shorts (m) | sneakerinas | similar bag

Our office doesn’t actually have a dress code (obviously, haha) but if I feel like taking it up a notch, this is what I’m wearing. I love how every piece of this outfit has *something* fancy element…yet the look is still totally casual.

10. When Fall Feels Like 2nd Summer

The Formula: Big Cotton Sweater + Sandals + Black Straw Bag

Silk Reformation shorts with J.Crew rollneck sweater.

sweater (s) – stripes here | shorts (m) | flats | bag | ring (available for Discord pre-order)

I think (hope?) we’re well past 2nd summer now, but this J.Crew rollneck sweater is too good not to talk about. It fits that oversized top + shorts outfit formula I’ve been rocking nonstop, and, well, there I go again with the black + brown.

NOTE: This sweater is, technically, unisex. For some reason, the women’s sweater only links to solid colors, the stripes can be found via the men’s sweater – but it’s the same sweater!! This sweater does run big, but I think you want it big, so go with your usual women’s size (ignoring J.Crew’s sizing advice). Says me. 🙂

The Outfit Formula That Keeps It All Together

If you notice, every. single. look. above can be summarized by the same outfit formula:

oversized top + silky shorts + flat shoes + feminine, unfussy bag

That’s it! Once I locked that in (after a bunch of trial & error), getting dressed became easy – just a few tweaks to a base formula that always felt like me.

And that’s what these mini-capsule wardrobes are really about: discovery (not restriction). Finding a way to make an exciting piece – one that makes your heart beat fast – actually work in your existing wardrobe.

And then remixing the heck outta it until it becomes your new favorite thing. 😉

Want more examples like this? I’m planning to do more “mini capsule” posts like this one, built around one piece I’m really excited by. (Or, if you’d like, I’d love to play around with a piece that you guys find exciting – so let me know!!)

xo,

S
