Watch Trailer: Trace Lysette Confronts Her Painful Past with Patricia Clarkson in ‘Monica’
In “Monica,” Trace Lysette returns home to care for her dying mother. A new trailer for the Venice Film Festival title introduces us to Monica (Lysette, “Transparent”), a trans woman who is reunited with her mother Eugenia (Patricia Clarkson, “She Said”) and the rest of her family for the first time since she Left the city as a teenager.
“Family comes first,” says Eugenia. But Monica is convinced that her mother “doesn’t know who [she] Is.” She remembers Eugenia telling her, “I can’t be your mother anymore.”
Described as an exploration of “universal themes of abandonment and forgiveness,” “Monica” hits theaters May 12. Emily Browning (“American Gods”) plays the lead role.
