#1: Sandy Bronde Shixie with Stacked Crown and Wispy Perimeter
The layers in the crown area are cut shorter to add height, but the layers above the ears and nape are longer for a wispy and airy look. The contrast does all the work. Texture is from a razor through the mid lengths. The hair isn’t thin or flat looking, it’s more worn in and separated. This color is a warm bronde. The face is brightened and contrasted by the concentration of highlights through the fringe, which is more full and dark in the back. For this cut looking its best, I would say medium density hair is the best hope. A classic case of fine hair and no volume. If you have hair like mine, you will be disappointed trying to maintain this cut. This cut looks best on oval and heart shaped faces. The fringe softens the look, but doesn’t close the face. This cut is low maintenance, but definitely worth it!
#2 Warm Copper Shixie with Feathered Crown and Textured Sideburns
Sideburns are detail essentials here, shaped and razored to give that wispy effect against the skin. It gives just the right amount of separation from a basic pixie cut. The crown adds height with short layers that razor off weight and add texture and fullness. This style is not ideal for fine hair. The hand-painted balayage offers an extremely natural and subtle lighter dimension on top. The warmth from the copper-brown shade really adds movement to the style. This frame complements well for an oval and heart shape face. This short length style does not provide enough hair to give enough of a frame around the face for a round-shape face.
#3 Warm Brunette Shixie with Tousled Crown Height and Copper Ribbon Highlights
Some short layers can make a big difference, especially when you’re hiding a flat, long hairline. Short layers help to frame your face rather than hiding it. This style is mostly point cutting to create volume towards the crown, and is purposely made messy. It’s supposed to appear unstructured. Thin copper pieces are woven through dark brunette base and catch light without forming a highlight, and that means this style works with medium to dense hair. It won’t with fine hair because it won’t hold the volume without product, and would look unstructured not long after it was styled. Round faces should avoid this style due to no length to pull it down.

This cut has less of a fuss and is easier to style than most shapes made to look like crowns. Large, special side cuts and temples with almost no hair look nice and let your curls and a thrown together looking, though, not actually thrown together, crown stacked on top with the shape not looking too overly wide. The photo shows an example of a beautiful, natural warm honey blonde hair color that is not totally artificial and balances 3A curls so well. For oval and heart shaped faces, the short, layered bangs will flatter that face shape and open it up. The tutu shape will not vaunt looser or natural, wavy curls. If you had curls point cut to fringes, they will curl, and stay in place above your eyebrows, and straight hair cannot do that.

Tapered sides help show the curl pattern beneath the surface of the hair. Without the contrasting color, the curl pattern would lose its shape. This point-cut Shixie requires curly or wavy hair in the 2C to 3A range. This cuts the brown hair and maintains the low-maintenance dye free natural look and encourages natural definition. On an oval or heart-shaped face, this frame softly conceals the forehead without camouflaging it. The curvature created by the sides and volume will create an unbalanced appearance for round-shaped faces. The curls at the crown will be left longer to encourage coiling, and the fringe is shorter and looser to frame the volume. This cut will need to be performed daily to prevent frizz and keep the style.

Texture paste is what you’ll need for that separation without any additional styling.

That crown! All the height and volume with not a product on it. Natural waves help all this incredible amount of height. This stylist used a technique with point cutting and really let each section define its own layline rather than cutting closely relative uniform layers. Because of the wavy texture in this style and length, it looks absolutely adorable. The fringe also has a nice cut and looks great on her because the slightly separated cut gives dimension to her face while a straight across cut would probably look worse. A person with straight or fine hair does not look nearly as cute because this style takes advantage of wavy curls. When curls are even a slight amount wavy some would call this style low maintenance, you really should try it!
#8 Jet Black Shixie with Choppy Crown Texture and a Short Pieced Fringe
This cut requires a lot of confidence since it doesn’t involve much hair to cover the forehead. If you wear this, you need to be comfortable showing off your forehead. The hair up top has been aggressively point cut to create a style similar to bedhead. The hair on the sides is essentially a whisper, nothing more than hair that almost scrapes the ear. This cut is going to need some texture from natural hair to avoid falling flat. The cut does require texturized hair but without the natural hair wave or curl some will find it a bit boring. This cut adds a lot of length and therefore works best with round or oval face shapes. The length helps elongate a long face shape. Fine hair won’t work well with this style since the black single processed hair creates contrast that can make fine hair types look flat. There is a lot of grow out with this cut so avoid it if you can.
#9 Spiky Cool Brunette Shixie with Swept Crown and Clean Sides
The crown has a lot of intricate detail. The cut is designed with a point so the top of the crown can be spiked while keeping the sides short. This style looks best on medium to thick hair. Fine hair will crunch. There is almost a complete razor cut on the sides and temple area. This essentially cuts out bulk in the style. Oval and heart face shapes will like this style. Round face shapes will have to pass. There are still width issues on the sides. It is dark brunette and has no color modifier. This really helps show off this cut because it is such a simple and clean style.

The weight distribution is excellent. The bulk is at the crown with barely any weight at the nape. This stops it looking mushrooming and is due to razor work and not just point cutting the ends. This style is suited to hair with some natural wave. Straight and fine hair won’t do this. The fringe is perfect length to show off the brow line and therefore should be worn with caution on square faces as there is nothing to create length. Heart or oval shapes are perfect for this. The color is a natural cool brunette with some warm pieces through the top layer. This cut looks great for at least 4 weeks and doesn’t need styling. After that it is long enough to elongate and grow out and still look purposely styled.
#11 Golden Bronde Shixie with Heavily Textured Crown and Baby Fringe
Notice the even weight distribution. It’s heaviest in the crown with the sides and nape evenly cut toward the ears to showcase them. Thinking about weight distribution in this way complements her oval face shape by elongating it. If you have a round or square face shape (like some readers might), this weight distribution actually elongates your face as well. However, if your face is more on the longer side, then this weight distribution placement will not look good on you. The color is a warm brown and there is a base color with some fine babylights making this a bronde. The color variation is what allows the hair to have a beautiful texture at this length. Layers without this color would look choppy, but due to the color, these look amazing without flatness. You can see the choppy pieces due to the point cut, which is irregularly connected to the rest of the pieces. It is an obvious point cut due to the layers ending choppy, that stubborn comb and scissors technique would never do. This cut would not be good on someone with thick, straight, flat hair. It takes texturizer and a lot of styling to get this cut to look good.
#12 Shaggy Warm Brunette Shixie with Wavy Texture and a Short Wispy Fringe
The Natural Wave is the showstopper of the design, so we can appreciate the shape of the cut. To achieve this look, you will have to style your straight hair everyday. So, think carefully before making the final decision to get this cut. This crown section is cut with heavy point cutting to allow the layers to separate. Fullness will appear and the look will appear effortless once the texture comes together. This style is a pixie cut, but is more like a short tidy length at the ears and nape. The fringe is cut short, spaced apart to create a short fringe that looks amazing on an oval and heart shaped faces and exposes the forehead. Fine hair will start to flatten within an hour.
#13 Dark Textured Shixie with Jagged Layers and a Wispy Nape
Brushing down all the pieces against the neckline instead of striking them down adds texture to this otherwise standard pixie cut. The thick, dark hair crown has the perfect amount of height from point cutting, leaving a short and cropped side to expose the ear. While not too severe, this style is perfect for those with medium to thick hair. With this style, thin hair will just end up looking flat. Oval and heart face shapes will look the best with the short fringe and exposed jaw. This style will look the worst for those with round face shapes. This style has a simple single dark natural process color. A dark natural color was best to showcase the texture in this style, without needing dimension to it.
#14 Choppy Brunette Shixie with Wild Texture and a Micro Fringe
This fringe is grazing the eyebrow line and is really serving this heavy on top look. The crown is heavily razored and pieced out. Details are even tighter than razor sharp with shorter wisps at the nape for a leftover piece for movement without overall bulk. This is some nice strategic point cutting. The separation between layers is great for texture and shape to keep the overall aesthetic kind of unrefined. This is great for round and oval face shapes. The height at the crown with shorter sides will just elongate your fine hair and face. As for people with medium to thick hair, this style will be great. Fairly texture heavy styles will just end up looking even more drastic on fine hair.
#15 Ash Brunette Shixie with Piecey Fringe and Ear-Length Layers
This pixie/shag hybrid has chopped angle, volume, and nape detailing. An asymmetrical shag is similar rather than a straight pixie cut due to the weight line, which is situated on the cheekbone rather than at the top of the head. Positioning the weight line of a tapered cut on the cheekbone as opposed to the jawline creates the illusion of a slimmer face as opposed to a fuller face. Slightly point cutting the fringe pulls the hair to the skin and reduces bulk on the forehead. This style would look best on someone with an average amount of hair rather than someone with an abundance of hair. Too little layering would result in loss of weight and volume. An ash brown tone cancels any warmth this hair may possess by covering the brown tone with a gray-brown tone.
#16 Blonde Razored Shixie with Shaggy Crown and Wispy Ear-Length Pieces
I built some volume with the razor, but this cut is actually quite a bit of texture which means you really don’t need any product at all, except maybe just a subtle matte paste to handle the flyaways around the ears, which I do recommend, but don’t worry about losing too much length up top, there actually is some length retained that echoes around the ears a bit to help soften the look which helps this top centered cut. If you have fine hair, this is a great option because it helps enhance volume in those areas especially, but if you have thick hair, I definitely expect this to mushroom pretty quickly, so be forewarned. I also think this is a fantastic cut for anyone with an oval or heart shape face, but not so much for those with round face shape, again because of the top volume, but the layering definitely helps with helping to create dimension and a natural looking warm shade of blonde.
#17 Curly Brunette Shixie with a Cropped Fringe and Tapered Nape
Trimming ears means the side length is just right. Leaving space there shows the purpose of this as a pixie (not grown out). This is curly hair hair, of course, so the cuts need to be dry (unshapely curls will create shorter fringe length). This will also help to create some curly definition in the fringe. It will not look good at all if straight and fine hair have this cut. Straight hair will just lack all the nice curly texture and volume. This cut is great for anyone with a 2B curl (straight hair and fine hair will end up looking flat and wispy). Especially for round faces. Because the sides and temples are left short (defining the length), it helps to decrease the roundness of the face. This style is great for short curly hair on oval shaped faces or heart shaped faces if the hair is a little longer.
#18 Tousled Warm Brunette Shixie with Choppy Crown Texture
Look at all that Crown lift with no visible product holding it up! No mousse needed for this shixie cut. This cut preserves length on the crown and fringe while allowing a nice tight nape and exposing the ears. This also shows off a clients natural wave, providing a great amount of dimensional texture which is normally only achievable through the use of a curling iron. Straight hair has no hopes of pulling off this look on its own. This style is great on oval and heart shaped faces because the fringe is loosely framing the face without fully concealing it. Round faces may lack the fringe definition. The warm dimensional brunette base and blonde highlights are great but subtle and may go unnoticed.
#19 Choppy Dark Shixie with Cherry Red Ribbon Highlights
This isn’t a foil or balayage technique, however this seems to be a ribbon technique that is applied at the top layer of the hair and is skipped at the fringe and nape, in order to keep the look from appearing to be costumey. The red coloring keeps this from being a balayage technique. The texture at the crown is razor or point cut to give movement and spikes to the hair. It looks unstructured and largely done without intention. There is micro fringe and is blunt with a slant that goes across the forehead. The hair behind it gets longer and goes toward the ears. It appears to work great on medium to thick hair. This looks great on fine hair, however throughout the day the shape will mostly likely be lost. The texture creates lift in the crown and the hair that falls beyond the ears is longer and keeps the look open. The red color that is throughout the hair balances and compliments the texture on rounder face shapes a lot, since it adds lift around the face. The texture of the fringe lifts and brightens overall. This coloring will most likely start to fade after a few weeks, however, the vibrancy will be most controlled with at home color depositing products.
#20 Sun-Kissed Shixie with Lived-In Texture and Soft Blonde Dimension
At the top, you can see a soft lift. The crown has been point-cut to give the appearance of a bedhead, without looking unkempt. This look is built on layers of hand-painted warm blonde highlights set against a base of sandy brown with the lighter and quieter sides concentrated at the top and on the fringe. This looks great with textured medium waves. For people with oval or heart-shaped face, this look will complement your style by adding length but still not fully covering your face. For straight hair, the effort to maintain this look will not be worth it without daily hair products. This style will unflatteringly expose your jawline with it’s short sides because of the balanced volume. Wispy framing places volume at the sides of your face so it looks longer. I find this style to have balance of volume and shape so it is a great go-to.
#21 Messy Caramel Shixie with Razored Movement and Forward Fringe
Most of the texture here is from the cut, while the product is secondary. Razored layers create lots of lift, and this one has medium density hair with a bit of a natural S-pattern. If you have naturally wavy hair, you may like this. Pin straight and fine hair? This will obviously lay flat on your head. If you’re going for a voluminous look, it will also lengthen your face, making round faces appear less round. This hairstyle for round faces would benefit from keeping the length a bit longer to minimize the cuteness of the short sides. Perfect no styling, wake up and go! Scrunch and go!
#22 Textured Shixie with Curly Volume on Top
These crowns beautifully frame the ears, but this particular crown has an intriguing design. The same material that eases around the ears constricts at the top which creates a curved design that is held by its own tension. This crown has razor texturing on top and a short layer on the nape, allowing nape hair to curl and creating less bulk. This crown will not keep the shape of straight hair. This design is ideal with waves and a good amount of density. This crown balances the chin and looks good on oval and heart-shaped faces, basically any face shape, just not a round face because this crown will make a round face appear wider. This crown is dark brown, no highlights or lowlights, and has lots of texture, which creates natural light and dark spots. This crown takes about 3 months to grow out so if you don’t mind having this crown for 3 more months, you should totally get it.
#23 Layered Shixie with Chunky Blonde Money Pieces
This one has so much dimension at the nape! This layering is avoiding that flat and helmet-like look that a lot of shixies have. The back and sides are short, but have a lot of length at the top and are razor textured to have all the choppy movement. This style needs medium to thick density for it to keep this shape. If you’re blonde, a lot of ‘money pieces’ can be heavily placed to create a single dark brows frame and brunette base. Without layers and dimension, this cut can get boring. Fine haired people will end up with layering that looks stringy, rather than intentional. Wispy bangs paired with side pieces and the shape of the cut that is leaning towards an oval and heart face shape, compliment this cut. This style does have a short and choppy top, so keep that in mind because it won’t hide a bad grow out too well.
#24 Razor-Cut Shixie with Warm Brunette Highlights
See the layers stacked at the crown? The nape is tucked in and clean. Great positioning of the layers does most of the work here, showing off dimensions and wisps that catch the light. The highlights are fine and delicate and are a warm caramel and strategically placed on top of a cool base brunette. The dimension of the highlights separates and distinguish the strands of hair, providing movement and dimension that conventional color would lack. This is a great cut for thicker hair as the razor cuts do not significantly diminish hair bulk and help retain volume by the hair. If you have fine hair or hair that is naturally flat, this cut will not help the hair retain the shape in this photo and will hang limp. Oval and heart faces will appreciate this cut with the longer bangs framing the face. This cut will begin to look baggy and be shapeless in roughly 5 weeks.
#25 Feathered Brunette Shixie with Soft Wispy Layers
Starting with the crown, these layers are stacked and rather than leave the ends blunt, they’ve used a unique technique where they slide their shears in a way to create a feathery effect. This style keeps medium density hair looking fuller. The center of the bob has shorter layers that angle forward and up towards the face while the sides are tapered neatly to the ear and then all the layers gently graduate to the sides. This look is definitely not very flattering for those with rounder faces. The broadness of the style will only enhance the width of your face. The length is very flattering on many face shapes, especially hearts and ovals. Again, there is no real defined part. The length of the fringe depends on the width of your face. The fullest and flattering fringe is left to the person’s discretion to style. And, in the better interest of your mornings, where there will be minimal time for styling, you’ll probably have to keep this look up.
