That They May Face the Rising Sun: Film Review

111

Ireland:

That They May Face the Rising Sun follows a British couple who leave London for a new life in the Irish countryside. So, If you have ever had fantasies of escaping the big city for a simpler life, settle in for an armchair view of rural Ireland.

Cast of Characters:

Our couple seem very much in love, bemused by and happy to take care of the local curmudgeons. So, follow along as they feed the cast of colorful characters, help with chores on the farm, and offer support. Also, the wife is an artist showing her work in a London gallery, and the husband is a writer. Furthermore, inspiration for his daily writing comes from the comings and goings of the locals. It appears that the majority of town folk are elderly, as jobs are scarce and the young folks have left for a better life in the big city. We are treated to a meditation on the cycle of life and death. One takeaway is that regret is useless, “you can’t light the fire with regret”. As you may have heard, the Irish are well-known for being great storytellers.

Drama:

The subtle drama is wondering if the couple will return to London, or make a home in their country cottage. They seem content, but the wife must make an important decision about her career. If you like the “slice of life” style of French films, this is your jam.

Where to Watch:

Currently, That They May Face the Rising Sun is available for streaming on Amazon Prime & Apple TV.
