    Acharya Sushruta has explained treatment of Andhaputana Graha in Chapter 33 of Sushruta Uttara Tantra

    For Avasechana – Kashaya of Tiktaka Druma Patra

    For Taila – Suradi Taila (Sura, Sauviraka, Kustha, Haratala, Manassila and Sarjarasa) – Abhyangartha

    For Ghrta – Pippalyadi Ghrta (Pippali, Pippalimula, Madhura Varga, Madhu, Salaparni and Two Brhatis)

    For Shita Praedeha – Prepared from Sarvagandha Dravyas, applied on the body and eyes.

    For Dhupana – Kukkuta Purishadi (Kukkuta Purisha, Kesha, Charma, Sarpatwak and Jirna Bhikshu Samghati i.e. worn-out clothes of ascetics.

    For Dharana – Amulets made of Kukkuti, Markati, Simbi and Ananta.

    For Nivedha – Raw and cooked meat. Oblation should be offered at the meeting place of four roads and also inside the house.

    For Snana and Puja – Sarvagandhodaka, followed by prayers.

    Description of Andhaputana Graha – She is terrifying, brown in colour, head is shaven, wearing ochre-coloured clothes.

 

The 33rd chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is named as Andhaputanagraha Pratişedha Adhyaya. This chapter deals with the Treatment of Añdhaputanagraha.  

अथातोऽन्धपूतनाप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः ||१||
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ||२||

We will now expound Añdhaputanãgraha pratiṣedha – treatment of the child seized by Añdhaputanā; as revealed by the venerable Dhañvañtari.

Avasecana, Taila, Ghrta

तिक्तकद्रुमपत्राणां कार्यः क्वाथोऽवसेचने |
सुरा सौवीरकं कुष्ठं हरितालं मनःशिला ||३||
तथा सर्जरसश्चैव तैलार्थमुपदिश्यते |
पिप्पल्यः पिप्पलीमूलं वर्गो मधुरको मधु ||४||
शालपर्णी बृहत्यौ च घृतार्थमुपदिश्यते |५|

Avasecana – Bathing should be given to the child by using the decoction of tiktakta druma patra i.e. leaves of trees having bitter taste.

Taila – Oil should be prepared with Surā, sauvīraka, kustha, haritāla, manaśśilā and sarjarasa. This oil should be used for anointing / giving massage to the body of the child afflicted by Andhaputana graha.

Ghrta – Ghee should be prepared using the below mentioned herbs –

        Pippali,

        Pippalimūla,

        Madhura Varga (Kakolyadi Gana) group of herbs,

        Madhu – honey

        Salaparni and

        Two Brhatis

This ghee should be given for licking / oral consumption for the child.

Shita Pradeha, Dhupana

सर्वगन्धैः प्रदेहश्च गात्रेष्वक्ष्णोश्च शीतलैः ||५||
पुरीषं कौक्कुटं केशांश्चर्म सर्पत्वचं तथा |
जीर्णां  भिक्षुसङ्घाटीं धूमनायोपकल्पयेत् ||६||

Shita Pradeha – cold poultices prepared from Sarvagandha i.e. group of fragrant herbs and substances should be applied on the body and eyes of the children afflicted by Andhaputana Graha.

Dhupana – For providing fumigation, the below mentioned materials shall be used –

        Excreta of cock

        Human hairs

        Leather

        Peel of snakes

        Worn out clothes of ascetics

 

Dharana, Nivedha, Snana, Puja

कुक्कुटीं मर्कटीं शिम्बीमनन्तां चापि धारयेत् |
मांसमामं तथा पक्वं शोणितं  चतुष्पथे ||७||
निवेद्यमन्तश्च गृहे शिशो रक्षानिमित्ततः |
शिशोश्च स्नपनं कुर्यात् सर्वगन्धोदकैः शुभैः ||८||
कराला पिङ्गला मुण्डा कषायाम्बरवासिनी |
देवी बालमिमं प्रीता संरक्षत्वन्धपूतना ||९||

Dharana – Amulets made of Kukkuți, Markați, Simbi and Ananta should be worn on the body of the child afflicted with Andhaputana Graha.

Nivedha – oblation in the form of raw meat and also cooked meet and also blood should be offered to protect the child from the affliction of Andhaputana Graha. They should be offered at the meeting place of four roads and also inside the house where the child resides.

Snana and Puja – Water added with Sarvagandha should be used to bathe the child. Later, prayers should be offered to please Andhaputana Graha as – “Goddess Añdhapūtanā, you look terrifying. You are brown in colour and your head is shaven. You, the one who is wearing ochre-coloured clothes, become pleased and protect the child.”

इति श्री सुश्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गते कुमारतन्त्रे अन्धपूतनाप्रतिषेधोनाम (सप्तमोऽध्यायः, आदितः) त्रयस्त्रिंशोऽध्यायः।।३३।।

Thus ends the thirty third chapter by name Añdhaputanagraha Pratişedha in Uttara sthana of Suśruta Samhita.
