Styling Men’s Hair with Anh Co Tran
When it comes to men’s styling, Anh says it feels like second nature. He understands the shapes, textures, and finishes men tend to gravitate toward, and he enjoys creating looks that feel natural, lived-in, and easy to maintain.
One of his favorite parts is helping men embrace their natural texture. For example, for clients with wavy or curly hair, Anh loves that hair can be worn naturally or blown out for a more polished finish. Being able to move between those two looks with minimal effort is what makes men’s styling fun and versatile.
Go-To Products for Men
These are the products he reaches for the most when styling his male clients:
- Milbon Molding Wax #5 + Molding Wax #7: Great all-around stylers with solid hold and control.
- Milbon Matte Texturizing Paste #8: Adds hold without shine, this is ideal for edgier, spikier, or editorial looks. He chooses Matte Texturizing Paste when he wants volume that won’t fall flat. It works especially well on coarse hair.
- Milbon& Froth Blowout Foam + Velvet Texturizing Cream: Perfect for men with wavy hair or anyone who prefers a softer, more natural hold.
- Milbon& Puff Finishing Paste: For fine or slightly longer hair, he’ll reach for Puff to boost lift and texture without weighing the hair down.
How Anh Decides the Direction of the Style
- For rounder faces: keep the sides sleeker and add more height on top.
- For long or narrow faces: soften the height and allow more width through the sides.
- Hairline also matters. If pushing the hair back doesn’t flatter the hairline, he will focus on pushing the hair forwards.
If dealing with cowlicks, the trick is to neutralize the direction of a strong cowlick so the hair can be styled either way. If it naturally pushes right, he’ll work on styling the hair slightly to the left to balance it out and vice versa.
Tools He Trusts
Anh rarely uses a razor on men’s cuts. While razors can create great movement, they can also make hair feel drier as it grows out unless the blade is extremely sharp. Anh prefers scissors for precision and control.
For styling, he recommends a comb with longer, deeper teeth, especially for short hair. For wavy textures, choose a comb where the “fine” teeth are actually wider to prevent snagging and help enhance the wave pattern.
