That generosity is beautiful… but let’s pause.

  • I created three logo concepts for a friend, none of which they used. They told me they didn’t want to hurt my feelings but they wanted to go with a real company…
  • I gave away countless hours of consulting,  and realized my actual paying clients were getting my leftovers.

I didn’t feel generous. I felt used, confused, and unseen. And truthfully? I had set up the dynamic that caused it.

The Psychology of Value

Humans are wired to connect value with investment. When something is free, it’s often perceived as low-risk  and sometimes low-priority.

When you charge for your services, you’re not just placing a price on your time,  you’re inviting people to engage with your work intentionally. You’re saying: “This matters. And so do I.”

That’s a powerful signal, especially for small business owners who struggle to be taken seriously in saturated markets.

A New Frame: Intentional Generosity

Offering pro bono work isn’t wrong,  but it should be strategic, not automatic.

  • Offer a free resource that lives on your website,  like a lead magnet, quiz, or workshop replay.
  • Choose one pro bono project a quarter for a cause you deeply believe in.
  • Create sliding scale options or scholarships for specific services,  with boundaries around scope and timeline.

This isn’t pulling back — it’s refining forward. You’re protecting your energy so your best work reaches the people who value it most.

Real Impact, Real Exchange

When you honor your worth, your clients do too. They show up prepared, invested, and grateful. You get to serve from overflow, not burnout. And your business doesn’t just survive,  it thrives.
