Rebellion Festival preview – LOUD WOMEN
Hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, The Dollheads are a punk trio made up of siblings Angela, Samantha, and Austin. Last year, they played the LOUD WOMEN stage at Rebellion Festival, and they’re back again this year – you can catch them opening the Empress Ballroom stage on the Saturday of the festival – and before then, on 3 August at The Lexington, London, for our LOUD WOMEN at Rebellion preview!
Keep reading to find out what the band had to say about what we can expect from them this time around…
How did you form The Dollheads?
Although we’ve been playing music together since Austin was in 1st grade, we didn’t become The Dollheads until early 2022. Music has always been a large part of our lives and we spent a lot of our time during the COVID quarantine learning covers and playing them together as a band. However, when the lockdown ended, we decided that we wanted to take music more seriously. We recorded three songs in August 2021 and spent the next few months coming up with a new band name and song titles. We announced ourselves as The Dollheads in 2022, along with our debut single, ‘Parasite’.
For anyone not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?
We would describe our sound as pretty diverse and energetic. Lately we’ve been experimenting a little more with our sound, so our newer songs range from melodic/pop punk to more classic punk sounding stuff. A common theme that we all write about are our experiences as teenagers and how life looks from our perspective, which most people at some point in their lives have also been able to relate to.
If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would you choose?
We’re about to release the lead single from our new album on July 25th called ‘Burger King is Hiring’. This was one of our favorite songs from our new album because of the back story. It’s sort of a reminder to us and to others to not let someone’s opinion define who you are.
What can we expect from your set at Rebellion?
Now that we know what to expect at Rebellion, we’re going to make sure our performance is just as energetic and fun as last year. The majority of the songs that are going to be on our set are from our upcoming album, and we hope to blow people away with our new music.
You played the Loud Women stage last year. How was that experience?
Playing the Loud Women stage last year was an unforgettable experience. Walking on that stage for the first time and seeing a huge crowd there to support us is a moment that we’ll never forget. The amount of people that came for our set caught us really off guard since we’re from Vegas, so we didn’t think anyone would be that familiar with us. But, the room was so packed that people were overflowing into the hallways outside. It was amazing hearing so many people sing our songs along with us. Then at the end of our set, Charlie Harper came up to us and bought a shirt.
What would you say to someone who maybe doesn’t understand why we still need things like Loud Women?
Angela: Not many people like to admit it out loud, but there are so many scenarios in which women are not taken as seriously, simply for being women. I’m still only a teenager, but even as a young woman, I’ve already had to face these kinds of situations. I feel like there are too many people out there who still aren’t accepting of the fact that women can be independent, that women can be experts, or that women can express themselves in ways that aren’t traditionally “feminine.” That’s why we still need things like Loud Women. We need platforms to use our voices and break these stereotypes, and to let women know that they aren’t alone in the things that they go through.
Samantha: The music industry is very dominated by men and it is challenging for women to break through the industry norms. I feel that women are often not taken seriously and don’t get equal opportunities that men do, which is why things like Loud Women are very important. It gives us a chance to express ourselves and change the industry norms. Loud Women empowers and inspires women and reshapes not only the future of music, but the future of society.
Austin: Although it’s harder for me to relate, simply being in a female fronted band has opened my eyes to the many unfair views that are still around in the music industry. I’ve watched my sisters be taken unseriously by crowds, sound workers, and even other bands. However, when we play, we always blow them away. I feel that Loud Women and things similar to it are great opportunities and platforms for female artists to get their music out there and gain the respect that they deserve.
Are there any other bands on the line-up you’re particularly looking forward to seeing?
Angela: I’m looking forward to seeing The Meffs, Maid of Ace, I Doris, and Knuckleheadz.
Samantha: I’m looking forward to seeing Circle Jerks, The Drowns, Los Fastidios and Split Dogs.
Austin: I’m looking forward to seeing the UK Subs, Millencolin, Pet Needs and Subhumans.
What else are you up to this year – any tours/festivals/releases you want to tell us about?
We just announced our album Adol-essence that will be coming out on August 22nd on Fat Mike’s label, Bottles to the Ground. The album was produced by Cody Leavitt of Asteroid M Recording in Las Vegas. We’ve been working on it for the past year and a half and we are really excited to share it with people. We’ll have vinyls available during our tour in England this month ahead of the actual release.
And finally, is there anything else you’d like to add?
Angela: We just wanted to thank Cassie, Johnny, and the Loud Women team for giving us a shot at playing at Loud Women Fest two years ago. It opened up so many opportunities for us to play across England including Rebellion Festival.
Samantha: I want to add that having the opportunity to play at Loud Women, we also got to know so many amazing people that became good friends of ours!
Thank you so much to The Dollheads for answering these questions!
