Rebellion Festival preview – LOUD WOMEN

117

LOUD WOMEN will be at Rebellion Festival again this year, including taking of the Introducing Stage on the Sunday. Like last year, we have a fantastic line-up of women and non-binary powered bands – and what better way to kick off this years Rebellion interviews than with the awesome BEX!

First of all, when did you start making music and how long have you been writing/performing as BEX?

I started writing tunes when I was in secondary school, probably aged 13. I used to write on an acoustic guitar, they were awful. I never really shared any of them! When I was 16 I moved out of home and went to study music! That’s when I started to share songs with other people, they were still pretty rubbish but they were getting somewhere. Over lockdown I taught myself to play bass, I got a lot of traction online and this was the start of BEX. I wrote tracks in my room at home and 3 years ago I released my first track tiptoe. I really hate that song, and all my early music but I think that’s just the case with every musician!

For anyone not familiar with your music, how would you describe your sound?

Angry girl rock.

If you had to recommend one of your songs to a new listener, which one would you choose?

I think my answer would change everytime I release a new song. Right now I would say crybaby but ask me in a month and I’d say something else! My most recent work is always the most relatable to me and represents current me the best.

What can we expect from your set at Rebellion?

Madnesss, sweat, screaming, crowd surfing, moshing. Maybe I’ll bring back the bubbles, maybe I’ve got a new BIGGER surprise!

You’re playing last on the LOUD WOMEN stage this year! What would you say to someone who maybe doesn’t understand why we still need things like LOUD WOMEN?

It’s hard to explain things that are so obvious to us, to people that don’t understand without sounding frustrated. We live in a very broken world, there’s inequality in everything, not just gender. In order to make things equal, I believe the power has to swap sides to then balance out. We need to support women in music and in any job where there is division because we need to destroy the inequality and the sexualisation.

It’s no secret that women are sexualised in this industry, degraded, used and not respected. We need a support system such as LOUD WOMEN, Safe Gigs For Women etc.. to help navigate the industry and to help make that change we want to see! We need things like this to not only create safety but to raise awareness. Slowly but surely things are changing and they will change.

Are there any other bands on the line-up you’re particularly looking forward to seeing?

Oh yeh!!! I’m really excited to see The Damned, and, of course, my girl Bridget

You’re fiercely DIY in everything you do, including designing/making your own clothes and merch. Can you tell us a bit about the clothing you make and sell at your shows – it all looks amazing!

DIY is the way forward! We live in a consumer world, we are wasting so much and causing so much damage to our environment! The only way to save the planet is to stop consuming, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have nice things or the things you want! I like to take second hand clothing and give it a new life. Alternative fashion can be hard to come by, especially not cringe alt fashion. So I wanted to make clothing that I love but is also not damaging the planet! I’ve always hated having the same clothes as someone else, so with my clothing line I make only one of ones, so everybody can be unique and express themselves in a way nobody else can! I love being me and I want everybody to love being themselves and the way we present on the outside is a big part of that!

What else are you up to this year – any tours/festivals/releases you want to tell us about?

This year is going to be BIG! I have a mixtape coming out on June the 6th with a video and an awesome surprise! We are playing festivals such as Download, Boomtown, Rebellion and Pride Rock! I’ve of course gotta plan my yearly big London show at the end of the year and then the rest is a surprise hehe!

And finally, is there anything else you’d like to add?

I am super excited to play Rebellion Festival, especially the LOUD WOMEN stage! GIRLS ROCK HARDER!
