Nathalie Miller’s Celestial EP ‘Like You Used To’ Sparkles
Brookyln based indie-pop artist Nathalie Miller returns with a sparkly, celestial EP that is completely entrancing. Flying us off in a musical tornado to somewhere more magical, Miller takes us through some Oz-themed song titles in like you used to. There’s no place like home, and home is where her music is.
like you used to kicks off with the light and ascending ‘kansas’; twinkly synths cascade around Nathalie’s beautifully crafted lyrics.
‘witches don’t burn’ feels dramatic with it’s almost orchestral staccato chorus while the EP’s mid-point ‘sit and stew’ is reminiscent of early 00’s indie-pop.
“I like big songs. I like songs that feel like they’re going somewhere or building up to something, so I always try to go for a little of that. I also like making it sound like there are a lot of people on the record …I always lean towards sounds that feel bittersweet and slightly nostalgic, but I wasn’t forcing any of the songs to sound like my previous stuff or like each other.” -Nathalie Miller
‘slippers’ is weighted in emotion, with floating vocals above heavy, pop ballad-esque piano.
Title track ‘like you used to’ spins a carousel-style rhythm that echoes the lyrics ‘the show’s gone on too long’.
Nathalie Miller manages to bring a child-like whimsy to well-crafted indie-pop; effervescent and ethereal.
