Must-Have Accessories for Fall and How to Style Each One

77

It’s time to swap out beach bags for blanket scarves and start leaning into fall. And while I do really love summer (pool days in the backyard will forever be my favorite), I get a little giddy when the mornings feel just a bit cooler—even if we’re talking Charleston-level “crisp.” I personally love welcoming the cooler season with small things, like elegant fall tablescapes and a Nest pumpkin spice candle. Most of all, though, I love finding new, seasonal accessories.

Accessories really can make or break your outfit. Before her book tour, my sister came over to borrow a few pieces to add a little oomph to her outfits. She has a beautiful wardrobe, but very few accessories. I let her borrow my Marisa Klass sphere pendant, a long strand of Tigers’ Eye beads, my Le Sundial tassel necklace, and a couple of different Savette bags. What are sisters for? Accessories are the easiest way to ease into your fall wardrobe without diving headfirst into heavy knits or coats. Think: buttery leather handbags, chic loafers, layered gold jewelry, and oversized scarves that can double as a blanket on a chilly night (or my favorite: the airplane)

If you’re still mentally sipping pomegranate margaritas in a sundress (same–it’s still hot here!), getting into the fall fashion mindset can feel like a bit of a jump. So to make it easier, I’m breaking down my favorite fall accessories. The classics I bring out year after year, but also the fun little updates I’m loving for this season.

I’ll also share how I style each one and which pieces I think are absolutely worth the money. Let’s get into it!

Must-Have Accessories for Fall and How to Style Each One

Oversized Wool Scarf

An oversized wool scarf is one of those fall staples I reach for again and again. It’s cozy, it’s chic, and it has that magical way of making even the most basic outfit feel pulled together. Layer it over a sweater for your morning coffee run or wrap it around your shoulders like a blanket on a chilly evening. It always adds that effortless, just-right finishing touch.

I love a neutral version—camel, cream, soft grey—because it pairs well with absolutely everything. But if you’re in the mood for something bolder, try a plaid or a rich autumn hue like forest green or burgundy. It instantly adds a pop of seasonal color and warmth.

Style it with a trench and ankle boots. You could also just throw it on with your favorite knit and jeans for the weekend. Whichever way you choose, you really can’t go wrong. It’s the kind of piece that’s practical and polished.

Wide Leather Belt

A wide leather belt is a fall accessory that jut pulls everything together! It’s especially perfect for this time of year, when we’re in oversized knits, slouchy blazers, and cozy coats. Just cinch one around your waist, and suddenly your whole look feels more intentional.

I love wearing mine over a chunky sweater dress with tall boots for an easy, pulled-together look. Or if you want something a little more tailored, try wrapping it over a wool coat or blazer. It adds structure and that cool, street-style edge. Bonus points if your belt has a bold buckle or comes in a rich fall tone—like oxblood or chocolate brown!

Chunky Rings

Chunky rings have always been a personal favorite. For my fortieth birthday, I had a Retrouvai lollipop ring made in malachite and green tourmaline. It remains a personal favorite. Right now, big rings are having a moment. I love how they can add a little personality to even the simplest fall outfits. And in the season of cozy layers and oversized pieces? A bold ring peeking out from your sleeve is such a fun way to elevate the look.

I tend to reach for warm, earthy tones this time of year. Think gold, bronze, or even a tortoiseshell resin. They pair beautifully with fall textures. Try out a vintage-inspired design as a standalone statement piece! You can also absolutely pair it with other pieces of jewelry, but I recommend keeping them slim and dainty. This helps everything feel balanced and cohesive.

Whether you’re dressed up in a wool coat or just heading out in a turtleneck and jeans, a chunky ring (or two) is the kind of detail that makes the look feel a little more styled. Check out my post about cocktail rings for some more inspiration!

Beaded, Stone, or Wooden Necklaces

Beaded, wooden, and stone necklaces are such an underrated fall accessory. I love beaded necklaces and recently scored a wooden strand from Iris Apfel’s collection during her estate sale on The RealReal. There’s something about natural textures, whether it’s smooth wood or hand-strung beads, that just feel right for the season. They add warmth and personality to even the simplest outfits, and they really pop against cozy knits, wool coats, or a classic turtleneck.

I especially love a chunky wooden necklace paired with a soft sweater or blouse. It gives off a subtle, grounded vibe that’s still elevated. And if you’re someone who leans more neutral with your wardrobe, a mixed stone strand can add just the right touch of playfulness. Bonus points if you mix in other earthy textures like suede, leather, or a woven scarf to keep the whole look feeling cohesive and seasonal.

Suede Handbag

A suede handbag is one of those quintessential fall accessories I reach for year after year. They always look good and just get better with age. There’s just something about the soft, matte texture that feels perfectly in sync with the season. It’s cozy, tactile . . . a little bit luxe.

Unlike shiny leather, suede brings a beautiful warmth to your outfit. It plays so well with chunky knits, wool coats, and boots, which is basically everything in your fall wardrobe. I love a classic hobo bag or a crossbody for everyday wear. But if you’re feeling a little playful, fringe or patchwork details can add a more bohemian twist to your look.

Blanket Wrap or Poncho

A blanket wrap or poncho is one of those fall staples I miss during warmer weather! Cozy, chic, and basically the next best thing to leaving the house wrapped in your favorite throw blanket.

I love how it bridges the gap between outerwear and layering. That loose, draped silhouette adds just the right amount of movement and texture to any outfit, making you look pulled together even if you just tossed it on. Go with classic plaids, rich jewel tones, or earthy neutrals to really lean into the fall vibe.

Leather Loafers

If I had to name one shoe I reach for over and over again in the fall? It’s a good pair of leather loafers. They’re the perfect blend of polished and practical. Comfortable enough for all-day wear but still chic enough to pull an outfit together.

I’ve been wearing my beloved Gucci leather loafers for years (they’ve definitely earned their cost-per-wear). However, sadly, they’re out of stock. So I did a little digging and found a gorgeous pair from Sam Edelman that gives the same timeless, tailored vibe. They’re sleek, structured, and feel just as luxe.

Loafers are such a smart staple for transitional weather. I love pairing them with tailored trousers for a slightly “borrowed-from-the-boys” look, or with a midi skirt for something a bit more preppy. You can even style them with a peek of chunky knit socks if you’re feeling a little fashion-forward.

Statement Brooches

I’ll admit it: I have a soft spot for brooches. They might feel a little old-school at first glance, but don’t underestimate their charm. Brooches are one of the most underrated (and versatile!) statement pieces for fall.

Yes, they look lovely pinned to the lapel of a blazer or wool coat, instantly adding a hint of polish. But what I really love is how creative you can get with them. Pin one to a chain and suddenly it’s a pendant necklace. Use one to secure a scarf or wrap, and it’s both practical and chic.

Whether you gravitate toward classic gold and pearl styles, something vintage-inspired, or a quirky modern design, brooches are such a fun way to express your personality. Plus, finding the perfect piece at a flea market or antique store is always a fun adventure during the fall.

Structured Leather Tote

A structured leather tote is a forever fall staple that deserves a place in your closet. It strikes the balance between form and function. It’s chic enough to elevate your look, but practical enough to carry everything you need (laptop, scarf, lip balm, emergency flats… you get it).

I love how the clean lines of a structured tote keep the most layered outfits looking polished. Whether you’re wearing an oversized coat or a cozy knit, it adds shape and sophistication without trying too hard. Shades like classic black, rich cognac, or a deep burgundy always feel right this time of year. And best of all, they pair beautifully with fall textures like wool, cashmere, and suede.

Classic Mary Janes

There’s something so charmingly timeless about a pair of classic Mary Janes. They’re one of my favorite fall staples—equal parts polished and playful—and they manage to walk the line between vintage and modern.

The signature strap detail always feels sweet but not too precious, and they’re surprisingly versatile. I love wearing mine with everything from tailored trousers to midi skirts and tights. A glossy black pair is endlessly wearable, but I also have my eye on a fun leopard print pair to liven up my outfits.

Whether you go classic or statement, Mary Janes are the kind of shoe that makes your whole outfit feel thoughtful. And honestly? They’re just really fun (and comfy) to wear.

How to Wear Accessories in the Fall

Layer accessories like you layer clothes.

Layering accessories is a bit like putting together the perfect outfit. It’s all about balance, texture, and a little intention.

I like to think of it in three parts. Start with a base layer, something simple and chic, like a slim leather belt or a delicate gold chain. Then add a medium layer for a little dimension, maybe a printed scarf or a chunkier necklace. Finally, top it off with a statement piece that pulls it all together. Think: oversized wool scarf, a bold ring, a statement cuff.

This is one of my favorite ways to make even the most basic outfit feel styled and intentional. And let’s be honest, half the fun of fall fashion is the accessories. (And, they always fit!).

Play with seasonal textures.

Playing around with texture is one of my favorite ways to make an outfit feel more intentional. Fall fashion already leans cozy, so your accessories can either complement those textures or create contrast to keep things interesting.

Start with balance. Pair a soft, oversized sweater with something structured, like a leather tote or a wide belt. The mix of cozy and sleek is a littel unexpected and feels super polished. Or, you could even layer in touchable details. A suede bag, velvet headband, or even a faux-fur collar or scarf brings in that rich, tactile feel that embodies fall. These are the little elements that make an outfit feel special.

Contrast is your friend here. A silk scarf peeking out from under a wrap coat or trench? So good. It breaks up heavier textures and adds a touch of softness and shine. The trick is combining two or three textures in a single outfit. Nothing too fussy, just thoughtful layering.

Use accessories to add color.

Adding colorful accessories is one of my favorite tricks for adding a little something to a fall outfit. If most of your cold-weather staples lean neutral, using accessories to bring in rich, seasonal tones can elevate your outfit without totally reinventing your wardrobe.

Think: a burgundy leather bag, a mustard scarf, or even a pair of emerald statement earrings. These small pops of color instantly brighten up muted layers, but still feel cohesive with fall’s palette. It’s an easy way to add a little personality to your outfit without overthinking it.

Let accessories set the mood of an outfit.

Accessories are one of those little styling secrets that can totally change the vibe of an outfit.

Take a chunky sweater and jeans for example. Super cozy and casual, right? Add a blanket scarf and gold hoops, and you’re ready for a relaxed weekend. But swap those out for a structured tote and leather loafers, and suddenly that same outfit feels polished and put-together.

Bold earrings or a fun brooch bring a playful twist. Sleek gold jewelry and a wide belt? Instantly more refined. That’s the magic of accessories—they set the tone. Whether you’re aiming for casual, elegant, or a little edgy, the base outfit can stay the same. It’s the finishing touches that tell the full story.
