Maison d’Etto Durban Jane – The Stripe
Over the past year, I’ve fallen hard for Maison d’Etto’s fragrances. It started with Verdades, which I bought after seeing it featured on a few of my favorite substacks. I featured it in this fragrance roundup, and while I like it a lot, it’s more of a winter fragrance for me—big and cozy! It has white floral and orange blossom notes, which, in theory, sound very light! But it’s a little heavier and warmer, thanks to rich vanilla bean and patchouli.
More recently, I’ve been reaching for Durban Jane. I would describe this fragrance as precisely what to buy if you loved Le Labo Santal 33 in 2015, but stopped wearing it when everyone in New York caught on and it’s all you could smell walking down the street. The scents are very similar but this feels more unique and special. It has a brighter finish and feels lighter (perfect for summer).
Durban Jane is for me, addictive! I’ll put it on and be unable to stop smelling my wrist. It’s woodsy but not heavy at all: that rare sandalwood fragrance that still feels right in warm weather. The scent also feels very comforting to me. While I described Verdades as a cashmere hug, this could be a linen hug?Sandalwood, orris, and ambrette are the key notes, but there is also a freshness to it. I cannot get enough of the scent. I mix things up on a daily basis, but reach for this at least a few times a week. They also made a gorgeous (but expensive) candle of the same fragrance. Sadly, I finished the candle just before I left for my trip. I am holding off on buying another as I have (many, many!) other candles to burn, but this is a favorite. It would make an extra special hostess gift.
