A brooch worn by Jacqueline Kennedy when she was first lady sold for more than double its high estimate in Freeman’s | Hindman’s 378-lot Important Jewelry auction last Thursday in New York City.
Expected to achieve between $6,000 and $8,000, the Kennedy brooch—featuring a gold Grecian coin at the center of an 18k gold leafy wreath with emerald adornments—went for $20,955. It was accompanied by a photograph of Kennedy wearing the brooch at an April 1961 reception in the White House State Dining Room for the wives of American Society of Newspaper Editors members.
In total, Freeman’s | Hindman’s inaugural Important Jewelry sale achieved $3.8 million. The top lot was a platinum ring with more than 16 cts. diamonds, which was estimated at $80,000–$120,000 but achieved $190,500. The ring has a 10.89 ct. round brilliant-cut diamond and a pair of yellow gold infinity bands embellished with approximately 6 cts. t.w. princess-cut diamonds.
Kennedy’s brooch had been purchased in Sotheby’s Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sale in 1996. For the Freeman’s | Hindman’s auction, it came from the private collection of a woman in Lake Forest, Ill. The lot included a Sotheby’s box, the original auction tag and catalog, and the book Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.
