In Loving Memory of Professor Dr. Subhash Ranade
The California College of Ayurveda (CCA) honors the life and legacy of Professor Dr. Subhash Ranade, a globally revered teacher, scholar, and ambassador of Ayurvedic Medicine. Dr. Ranade passed away peacefully, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy that transformed the global landscape of Ayurveda. A pioneer in Ayurvedic education, Dr. Ranade served as the former head of Ashtang Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India. He dedicated his life to spreading the wisdom of Ayurveda across the world, traveling extensively and inspiring thousands of students and practitioners with his depth of knowledge and boundless generosity. His work laid the foundation for the global Ayurvedic movement we see today.
Dr. Ranade began visiting the United States in the early 1990s. In 1991, he was introduced to CCA’s founder Dr. Marc Halpern by Dr. David Frawley. This meeting sparked a close and enduring relationship. Dr. Ranade’s many visits to California included extended stays, during which he generously shared classical Ayurvedic texts and engaged in countless hours of study, discussion, and patient care. These formative experiences played a significant role in shaping the curriculum and spirit of CCA. In 1999, Dr. Ranade organized our founder’s first visit to India, introducing him to renowned Ayurvedic teachers and institutions throughout the country.
According to Dr. Marc Halpern “I first met Dr. Ranade in 1991, introduced by Dr. David Frawley at a landmark conference. Soon after, I began sponsoring his visits to California, where he often stayed in my home. He brought me the classical texts, and we would spend countless hours exploring them together. I recorded many of our Q&A sessions—each one a treasure trove of insight and guidance. We also saw patients side by side, bridging ancient wisdom with modern inquiry. In 1999, Dr. Ranade organized my first trip to India, where he arranged visits with renowned Ayurvedic teachers and institutions across the country. That pivotal journey led to one of the first MOUs between India and the United States in the field of Ayurveda, connecting Gujarat Ayurved University with the California College of Ayurveda. His influence on my own life and on the mission of CCA cannot be overstated. His teachings echo in the classrooms of our college and live on in the work of every practitioner trained under his inspiration.”
“Dr. Ranade was more than a scholar—he was a visionary. It is fair to say that without him, Ayurveda would not be growing so beautifully around the world. I have long referred to him as the “Johnny Appleseed” of Ayurveda, planting seeds of wisdom and healing across continents. Today, many of those seeds have grown into strong roots and flourishing branches.” added Dr. Halpern.
Dr. Ranade’s legacy continues to thrive in every graduate of CCA and in countless others around the world whose lives have been touched by his teachings. His humility, brilliance, and unwavering devotion to Ayurveda will never be forgotten. Dr. Subhash Ranade’s legacy is profound and eternal. He will be remembered not only as a scholar, healer, and teacher, but as a torchbearer of Ayurvedic wisdom across the globe.
