How To Style A Sweater Skirt: 8 Outfit Ideas

11

I knew as soon as I saw this asymmetrical sweater skirt from Mango that I had to get it. I had zero doubts I would love it, so I bought it instantly! It is 100% up my alley: cute, comfy, chic, and reasonably priced. Buying it wasn’t the issue, but I did wonder how I would style it. Since I am trying really hard this year to only buy pieces I know I will wear over and over again for years to come, I really wanted to get the most out of wearing this sweater skirt.

I knew I could wear it with practically any white/cream/grey top in my closet, but other than that I was stumped for ideas. So, I turned to readers who gave me some great styling suggestions.

This Sweater Skirt, 8 Ways For Winter, Spring & Warmer Temps

There is so much to love about this skirt: the quality is thick and soft, the styling is so chic and flattering (and curve accentuating) and the creative styling options are endlessly versatile. It really is a great transitional weather piece too. I’ve worn it recently in tropical weather with strappy sandals and a tank top, as well as in the snow in Michigan with moto boots and an oversized knit. Let’s get into all the fun ways I’m wearing this skirt.

`1. With an Oversized Denim Shirt

A couple of readers suggested trying the skirt with a denim shirt and it was the best tip ever and one I had NOT thought of. I love how easily denim pairs with this cream-colored skirt, it’s a great contrast between the two colors and this quickly became my favorite way to wear this skirt right now. It’s incredibly comfortable and the perfect combination of comfy and cute. You can easily pair this look with sneakers, tall boots or even sandals (which I just did this past weekend).

2. With a Grey Oversized Sweater

Talk about soft and cozy! I am absolutely in love with this combo right now. It’s like wearing the skirt version of a comfy sweat set. This Mango skirt is such a versatile cream that it could easily pair with a ton of different colors – not just lighter shades. But I’m really liking how how clean and simple this combo is. Now, the hard part (for me) is keeping this skirt stain-free. Luckily, it’s hand-washable.

3. With a Cocoon Shawl and Tan Moto Boots

This outfit is the ultimate oversized look and I am obsessed. This WeWoreWhat shawl was one of my favorite finds from my recent Cardigan Try-on Post. It’s the perfect drapey, cocoon fit and when paired with this Mango skirt, it gives off super luxe vibes (at very non-luxury prices). This shawl is currently 40% off and one of my favorite sweaters at the moment.

4. With a Denim Vest and Minimalist Sandals

I LOVE a good denim vest and this Madewell Denim Crewneck Vest has ended up being one of my most worn tops in my closet since I bought it this summer. It goes with everything, including this skirt. Thankfully, it’s finally been totally restocked and for the first time ever, not likely at risk of selling out

5. With a White Tee

Here’s another easy and likely obvious way to wear this skirt: with a fitted white tee. Here it is with both a long-sleeve tee and a short-sleeve tee, just in case you wanted to see how it looks with both options. I’m super happy that this skirt looks so great with my favorite moto boots from Jeffrey Campbell that I bought this past fall. Just when I thought I had run out of ways to incorporate these killer boots into my closet, this skirt comes along and gives me another option.

6. With a Cute Tank

I’m currently in Florida visiting my parents where it is decidedly warmer than Michigan right now. I am so happy with how well this skirt works for warmer temps as well. I’ve been wearing it all week long with tanks, bodysuits and crop tops and then adding my oversized denim shirt over top in the evening (and tying around my waist when if I get too hot).

7. With a Crop Top & A Statement Necklace

Another selling point of this skirt is the thick waistband. I love the thick knit quality that is great at not showing any lumps or folds when you tuck a shirt into the waist. I was worried that the hem would look bulgy when a top was tucked in, but you can’t tell at all! Yay! Also, I am trying to steer clear of Amazon as much as possible but I found this crop top already in my closet from last summer and it’s on sale for under $10 right now, if you are looking for a great deal.

8. With An Oversized Graphic Tee

I almost didn’t try this combo because in my head, I didn’t think it would work but…I kiiiiinda love it. Notice the “Millennial Side Tuck” that I ultimately went with because, after all, I am a Millennial and old habits die hard. But it also looks cute untucked, I just prefer the side tuck for this look because it creates a more interesting silhouette. I get all my graphic tees from Abercrombie, they are always super soft, perfectly oversized and have some of the best vintage-inspired designs.
