How to Get Beachy Mermaid Waves at Home
Summer is almost here, and with it comes a slew of summer hair trends. While highlights and subtle tones are popular color refreshes, mermaid waves are poised to be the season’s top style. Beach vibes with waves blowing free in the breeze tend to be common during the warmer months, as they’re easy to maintain and go with the vibe. But this season, the look is taking a polished approach. A hybrid between traditional waves and nostalgic crimping, mermaid waves feel modern and fresh. They were a favored look at Coachella and even graced the red carpet at the Met Gala this year. But beyond their seasonal appeal, mermaid waves offer a completely different look from bobs, which have dominated the trend circuit. If you’re looking to change up your look, these nostalgic waves are the perfect choice. Ahead, three experts share how to get the look at home, including tools, products and tips.

Why are mermaid waves trending?
Long, flowing waves are always trending this time of year, but mermaid waves offer a unique take on the classic look. Along with their beachy vibe, celebrity hairstylist Joey Scandizzo explains that mermaid waves are the perfect blend of polished and playful. “People are gravitating toward styles that feel more expressive but still wearable, and mermaid waves hit that sweet spot,” adds celebrity hairstylist Kaprisha Gipson. With subtle volume, movement and a touch of glam, she notes that the style can be as dreamy as it is effortless. Unlike traditional wavy hairstyles, this look features structured waves and loose crimping. In that vein, mermaid waves lean into nostalgic elements of Y2K trends. “Crimped, wavy hair was very big in the early 2000s, but this time around, the waves are modernized with a refined twist,” says Scandizzo.
How to create mermaid waves at home
Achieving gorgeous mermaid waves isn’t as hard as you may think. If you know how to wash, dry and curl your hair you’re off to a good start. However, the pros note that investing in the right tools and products is key to creating the most genuine look. Remember, mermaid waves are distinctly polished, so finding the right mix of products and hot tools is essential. According to Scandizzo, there are a few different ways to get mermaid waves, but the best option depends on your hair type and whether or not you want to use heat. “The fastest and easiest way to get mermaid waves is by using a triple-barrel waver or a deep waver,” he says. Since these tools are made to work on wider sections, they are ideal for medium-long hair. While waving tools work well, Hawkins notes that a 1” curling iron is perfect for creating undone sexy waves as well. Multi-styling curlers, such as those with interchangeable barrels, are another option that can help add dimension to your mermaid waves.
Surprisingly, salon-quality waves don’t require oodles of products to achieve. According to the experts, all that’s needed are three main items: a heat protectant, texture spray and shine serum. “Always begin with a good heat protectant to minimize damage and ensure your hair remains healthy,” says Gipson. She also recommends spritzing the strands with a texture spray before styling to add grip and help the curls maintain shape. To finish, Hawkins suggests running a serum through the waves to define and add the perfect amount of shine.
