How to Create a Cozy Bed for Better Sleep

Did you know the average person spends about one-third of their life in bed? That statistic completely changed how I think about sleep. If I’m going to spend that much time in bed, I want it to feel like a dream—literally. Since it’s Sleep Awareness Week, it’s the perfect time to talk about how a cozy bed can improve your sleep and overall well-being.
The National Sleep Foundation highlights the importance of sleep for health, and one of the easiest ways to sleep better is by upgrading your cozy bed setup. I’ve spent years perfecting mine, and I’m excited to share what works!
The Formula for a Cozy Bed
I love a firm-ish mattress for back support, but I also want that soft, cloud-like feel at the end of a long day. After testing different setups, I landed on this simple but effective formula:
Supportive Mattress
+
Cushiony Pillow Top
=
Perfection
Specifically, this mattress + this pillow top.
I’ve used this combination for years, and it truly makes a difference. I even set up my guest bedroom the same way, and every single houseguest tells me they never want to leave the bed.
The Best Mattress & Pillow Topper
A cozy bed starts with the right foundation. I personally love my Casper mattress—so much so that I’ve had them in multiple homes. I first got one in my West Hollywood condo, then ordered another when I moved to San Diego. I even have one in my guest room, and my dogs sleep on Casper beds, too!
But the real game-changer? A thick, plushy pillow topper. It’s the secret to getting that hotel-like feel at home. The combo of a supportive mattress with a soft topper gives you the best of both worlds—back support with that dreamy, sink-in feeling.
How I Style My Cozy Bed
Before my son and my most dog-like dog, Chubbs, I had luxury bedding all the way. My late pup, Bunny Bell, was just like me—she didn’t like getting dirty. Jack Jack has soft fur that magically repels dirt. But Chubbs? Let’s just say everything sticks to him. And if I don’t bathe him weekly, he stinks.
Of course, I could just not allow dogs in bed. But I love cuddling with my dogs, and the more oxytocin, the better! Plus, my son loves playing in my cozy bed, and sometimes he even takes a nap with his furry brothers.
So, I’ve had to rethink my love for high-end linens. While I still keep some luxury linen bedding, I’ve added more affordable, durable options to the mix. I stick to white and neutral tones, so I can easily mix and match layers without overthinking it. I use them with my Casper down alternative duvets, which I have in both rooms.
My Must-Have Pillow
The most important part of a cozy bed? My pillow. I’ve slept on Night silk pillowcases for years—they’re my absolute favorite. I rotate between white and champagne, and I also use Night’s memory foam pillow. Both are worth every penny, in my opinion.
Since better sleep starts with a cozy bed, making small upgrades can lead to more restful nights and improved well-being. And what better time to refresh your sleep setup than during Sleep Awareness Week? And it doesn’t have to take long either. I put together my guest room below at 9 months pregnant!
