Helen McCookerybook – LOUD WOMEN
Helen McCookerybook’s journey is anything but ordinary. From her early days in the punk scene with The Chefs to her later solo work, she’s carved a unique path that blends sharp social commentary with playful, introspective storytelling. Raised in the north-east of England and shaped by the punk explosion, Helen’s music is as eclectic as her career. Her bold yet gentle lyrics find poetry in the everyday – meditations on love, politics, and life’s little ironies.
With a discography spanning solo albums, collaborations, and film soundtracks, Helen’s sound continues to evolve. After the disbandment of Helen and the Horns, she turned her attention to solo artistry, releasing eight albums since 2006. Her latest, Drawing on My Dreams, showcases a refined style with contributions from music legends like Lindy Morrison (The Go-Betweens) and Anne Wood (The Raincoats).
Helen has always stayed true to her roots, blending folk, indie, and punk influences with a no-nonsense attitude, challenging norms and making music that resonates deeply with listeners. Whether she’s lecturing undergraduates or touring with her guitar, her authenticity shines through, and her music is a reflection of a life spent breaking boundaries.
