FII turns 12! A note from the FII team

Today FII turns 12! Over the past 12 years, FII has been committed to its mission to establish intersectional feminism, amplify marginalized voices, and advance gender discourse. As one of the few independent platforms speaking truth to power during a challenging time for media across the country, reaching our 12th birthday is a victory. We thank our readers for their support over the years and for the support and trust you have placed in FII and our work.
Our journey started in 2013 with a Facebook page. We launched our website in 2014 and published our first article twelve years ago on this day. A year later, in 2015, FII won the prestigious award Manthan Prize. The following year, 2016, our campaign “16 Days of Activism Against Sexual Harassment” won the Laadli Media & Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity in the “Best Web Campaign in English” category.
FII also represented its work at several international conferences, including ASAP’s Youth Think Tank, Access Now’s RightsCon, and the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Mexico. We also presented our work at RightsCon in Brussels, the Stockholm Internet Forum, the Digital Citizen Summit in New Delhi, Amnesty International in Bern and Making a Feminist Internet in Malaysia.
In 2017, FII attended the UN Women’s CSW conference in New York. FII then won the UN World Summit Young Innovator Award in 2019. In 2021, the Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation selected our site for inclusion in their South Asian Gender and Sexuality Web Archive. In 2022, FII received a grant from the Google News Initiative News Equity Fund.
Over the years, we have been honored with numerous awards for our campaigns, including the Laadli Media Awards, the UN World Summit Young Innovator Award, the Orange Flower Award, the SCARF Mental Health Award and the Social Media 4 Empowerment Award.
Today, we are an award-winning feminist platform that has published more than 15,000 articles across our English and Hindi verticals, produced numerous research reports and sparked much-needed feminist conversations across the country. And none of this would have been possible without our dedicated readers.
Over the years we have explored numerous formats, from text to videos To Podcasts and short content. As FII’s work has evolved and the scope of our operations has expanded, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to our core values. As we celebrate 12 years of FII today, we reaffirm our commitment to feminist ethics, truthful journalism, asking tough questions and igniting important conversations.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
