FII Annual Review: 2024
As we bid farewell to 2024, let’s take a look at the key achievements, impacts and initiatives that shaped our year.
The year 2024 began at the FII with a significant step towards gender equality, gender justice and intersectionality. FII, together with the YP Foundation, has launched a guide to reporting on abortion for media professionals, young journalists and abortion activists. This is just a small taste of the milestones FII has covered this year. Let’s examine the details carefully.

The English editorial team published a total of 1007 articles this year. The editorial team published numerous articles on various topics, from Travel and gender, Gender and lawTo Food and gender among other things, under our monthly theme Mood of the Month (MOTM).
English Editorial Co-Editor Shahinda Syed, along with YP Foundation team members, created a guide on how to report on abortion in a sensitive and progressive way. The guide called Flip the narrative was launched in March, with many journalists and activists in attendance at the launch party. FII Founder-CEO Japleen Pasricha and Associate Editor Shahinda Syed illustrated how to use the guide for accurate, sensitive and rights-based reporting on abortion. Shahinda highlighted the negative and sensationalist language and imagery used by the media when reporting on the sensitive issue of abortion, and how this guide could potentially help young journalists and media professionals develop more sensitive and progressive narratives. Japleen examined the ways in which narratives and terminology surrounding abortion are used, often without regard to the legality of abortion in each country. She shed light on the PC-PNDT law and how it interacts with and complicates abortion laws in India.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha general elections, FII initiated a survey titled “The Feminist Ballot”. The survey highlighted the voting experiences of women and queer people and a report was published by the team on the same. FII also released various ground reports and analysis pieces on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In 2024, FII celebrated its tenth anniversary and on this solemn and momentous occasion, while continuing its achievements, FII launched a new branch called “ The feminist joy Series. The team published 15 personal essays under the vertical.
FII English Associate Editor Ananya Ray was invited to speak at a catered salon event on “Queering Gastronomy” on behalf of the Department of Feminist Studies at UC, Santa Barbara and the House of ODD. Sohini Sengupta, FII English Associate, has been selected for the Laadli Media Fellowship 2024.
FII’s Hindi editorial team published a total of 610 articles this year. FII Hindi has created an editorial series called The Feminist Ballot Democracy, choice and the main thing. The Hindi team also ran an editorial campaign for 16 days of activism. FII Hindi published 18 personal essays under the Hindi version of The Feminist Joy Vertical.
Pooja Rathi, our Hindi editorial assistant, received the Laadli Award 2024 for her work; Viral deepfake videos of Indian actresses, a new kind of gender-based violence through technology. She also received a certificate of recognition from the jury for her story. How patriarchy determines how many hours women sleep. FII Hindi contributor Varsha Prakash won this year’s Laadli Media Award 2024 for her story. Gujarati Dalit girls’ experiences of casteism in inter-caste romantic relationships..
Pooja Rathi, our Hindi editorial assistant, has been selected as the 2024 Behavior Journalism Fellow with the Atlas of Behavior Change in Development. Pooja was also selected for Laadli Media Fellowship 2024. Malabika Dhar, Associate Editor Hindi, was selected by CREA for Disability, Sexuality, and Rights: An Online Study (DSROI Hindi).
multimedia
Our multimedia team has been exploring newer content formats, themes and styles this year. We have released more than 50 videos in English and Hindi on our YouTube channel this year. The multimedia team ran a campaign “The Feminist Ballot” along with a survey during the 2024 general elections. Over 369 participants participated in the survey and the campaign-related Reels received over 1.52 lakh views.
For 16 Days of Activism, both English and Hindi language multimedia programs produced a documentary film titled “Bandh toilet, open issue.” The documentary highlights the challenges faced by women and children living on the streets in Delhi due to the lack of accessible sanitation facilities. Through powerful testimonies, their struggles with health risks, harassment and systemic neglect are revealed. The documentary and its short videos have garnered over 1.7 million views across our social networks, reinforcing the call for urgent change.
Campaigns and collaborations
At FII, we understand the importance of partnerships in amplifying the voices of individuals across the country and around the world. In 2024, we collaborated with various global NGOs and brands to highlight and amplify the voices of marginalized groups and reduce stigma on various sensitive topics. With HowToUseAbortionPill, we worked on link building activities to drive traffic to their Hindi pages, making important abortion information more accessible to various Hindi-speaking audiences. With MyMahina, we have debunked myths about PCOS and promoted accurate information to dispel misconceptions about women’s health. We partnered with Project Khel and acted as a talent acquisition partner to help them hire a program manager. We have partnered with Global Health Strategies (GHS) to increase awareness of modern contraceptive options in India, combat stigma and promote informed reproductive health decisions. With IMB, we have created a series of articles on sexual wellness and pleasure, focused on breaking societal taboos and promoting healthy, informed discussions about sexual health. We collaborated with the ATE Chandra Foundation and published articles that examined the intersection of women and leadership, inspiring change and promoting gender equality. We also collaborated with Commutiny on a series of articles focused on youth engagement, leadership and empowerment. The partnership team partnered with Mankind Pharma to lead an awareness campaign emphasizing the importance of understanding and monitoring ovulation to promote better family planning and reproductive health.
For the third year, we have worked with IPPF to highlight critical issues related to SGBV and increase awareness and advocacy around this pressing societal issue.
Workshops
We have conducted seminars throughout the year for the FII team on various topics including the right to leisure, sustainable development and financial management. These sessions were conducted by industry experts and were of great help to our team members.
Social media
In 2024, our social media platforms saw a boom in engagement! Several thought-provoking conversations and interactions between our community members led us to rethink our approach. Our contribution on Highlights of Ambani’s wedding, This was a satirical post that received 61,000 likes and hundreds of comments. The role: Are you a “feminist” guy? has received 495.5k likes and 17.7 million views.
The FII community has grown significantly, with 20k+ subscribers on YouTube, 88k+ followers on Facebook, 52.9k followers on Twitter, 171k+ followers on Instagram, 21.3k+ followers on LinkedIn, and 2.7k+ followers on our Telegram channel.
