DEBBY FRIDAY returns with ‘1/17’, and she’s in her dance-pop era – LOUD WOMEN
Canadian musician, writer and filmmaker DEBBY FRIDAY is known for her critically-acclaimed, Polaris Music prize-winning debut LP GOOD LUCK. Now she returns with a titillating dance-pop single ‘1/17’, reminiscent of nostalgic, early noughties EDM (think Rui Da Silva & Cassandra Fox‘s ‘Touch Me’). Hypnotic, bouncing synths mix with Friday’s soft and sultry vocals to give us a brand new dance anthem in 2025.
The music video, directed by FRIDAY and Kevan Funk, is both aerial and grounding; emotive and hopeful. Speaking of the visuals, DEBBY FRIDAY says:
It’s based on an amalgamation of two experiences that I had. The first was when I won the Polaris Prize at Massey Hall, which felt like a peak moment in my career. The second was when, nine months later, I played a festival show to absolutely no one in the audience. I’ve spent the past year detaching myself from the highs and lows of this business and trying to see everything as a sign. Of what? I don’t know. But I’m sure in the end, it’ll all mean something.
Light and summery yet thumping and intense; ‘1/17’ is putting us in a trance and taking us to the clubs, festivals – anywhere with a dancefloor. DEBBY FRIDAY is currently working on her sophomore full-length album, while she continues to perform live. Catch her here, with more dates TBA:
15th May – The Great Escape Festival, Brighton, UK
3rd August – Osheaga Festival, Montreal, CA
