The celebrated Beninese singer-songwriter has become the first black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing her place as one of the continent’s most influential cultural ambassadors.
Kidjo’s musical career spans over 40 years and crosses genres – from traditional Beninese folk to jazz, pop, and Afrobeats. Her artistry has earned her numerous awards, including five Grammys, the Polar Music Prize (dubbed the “Nobel Prize of Music”), and countless other international accolades.
Beyond her musical achievements, Kidjo champions women and youth empowerment while boldly challenging gender inequality. As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002, she has worked extensively across Africa to promote education and girls’ rights.
Born in Cotonou, Benin in 1960, Kidjo grew up in a musical household where her mother sang in a local theatre troupe and her father was a postal worker who encouraged her artistic pursuits. She began performing professionally as a teenager, but political unrest in Benin during the 1980s forced her to relocate to Paris, where she would eventually establish herself as an international artist. This early displacement shaped her perspective on cultural identity and the power of music to transcend borders.
Her Batonga Foundation, established in 2006, provides scholarships and mentorship to young African women pursuing higher education, reflecting her belief that education is the key to transforming the continent.
