A Closer Look at Mark Zuckerberg’s $900K Watch
Mark Zuckerberg is making headlines not only for his decision to end fact-checking on Facebook and other Meta social media platforms but also for the nearly million-dollar watch adorning his wrist when he made that announcement publicly.
In last week’s Instagram post regarding Meta’s “content moderation” policies, the billionaire CEO wore a rare Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 watch, valued at over $900,000.
Known for meticulous craftsmanship and exclusivity, Swiss watchmaker Greubel Forsey produces only two or three of these timepieces annually. Assembled entirely by hand, each Hand Made 1 takes approximately 6,000 hours to create. The watch’s design is characterized by intricate mechanics and luxurious materials, reflecting the pinnacle of horological artistry.
Zuckerberg’s choice of this watch highlights his growing interest in and appreciation for high-end horology (remember how he was impressed by Anant Ambani’s watch?), but it also serves as a stark reminder of his immense wealth and the vast disparity between his lifestyle and that of the average Facebook user. Some observers questioned the optics of Zuckerberg’s lavish display of wealth while he was announcing that “we’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with ‘community notes.’”
“Nothing says I understand the culture shift of the community more than a watch that costs more than most people’s houses,” posted one tech pundit. Others argued that Zuckerberg’s personal spending habits are irrelevant and that the policies he implements at Meta should be of more concern than what he wears.
