Beach Vacation Packing List: Essentials for a Relaxing Getaway

There’s something about a relaxing beach trip in the summer that always lifts my spirits. I am a little bit sad that my family and I didn’t get back to Cape Cod this summer, but I am lucky to live in Charleston with beautiful beaches nearby. That feeling of nothing to do and nowhere to be is the perfect escape from reality. Besides the Cape (where I grew up), Tulum, Holbox, Harbour Island, Montauk are some of my favorite trips. Toes in the sand with a good book in hand; nothing is better! That said, packing for a beach trip definitely takes a little planning.
Over the years of traveling, I feel like I’ve really been able to fine-tune my packing method. Take it from me: packing the right stuff doesn’t just save you time, it also saves you stress and money in the long run.
I’ve had my fair share of those “I can’t believe I forgot that” moments as soon as I reach my destination. That’s why today I am sharing my ultimate beach vacation packing list. It has everything you really need for a comfortable, relaxing, stylish week by the water.
Beach Vacation Packing List: Essentials for Relaxing Getaways
Getting ready for a beach vacation always feels like that final push before you can fully relax. I get it: it’s tempting to think all you need is a swimsuit, a towel, and sunglasses. However, there are a few more things that make the whole experience feel extra comfortable and a little more luxe.
Today, I am going to share my essentials from my own beach trips. That includes everything from the must-have beauty products to the little extras that make a beach day feel effortless. I’m sharing exactly what I packed and a few favorite recs I swear by for a smooth, chic beach getaway.
How to Prepare for a Beach Vacation Without the Stress
Check the weather.
Of course, we all hope for nothing but sunshine and that perfect salty breeze on a beach trip. But let’s be honest, the weather doesn’t always cooperate. A few days before you leave, take a minute to check the forecast. Though it may change from day to day, it’ll help you get an idea of what to pack. I remember one trip to Cape Cod where it rained the whole time. A bummer, but luckily I had packed loads of cozy sweats. I’m so glad I planned ahead!
This can also help determine whether you pack light layers for the sun or something cozy for breezy, rainy afternoons. The goal is to feel prepped, not overpacked. A little planning makes all the difference in helping you avoid scrambling at the last minute.
Plan your outfits.
If you want to avoid overpacking (guilty!), my biggest tip is to plan your outfits ahead of time. Mix and match where you can to save suitcase space. If there’s a special look—like one of these tropical print dresses for dinner—make sure you set aside the shoes, jewelry, and bag with it.
My go-to trick? Try everything on before you pack and snap a quick photo of each outfit. That way, you’ll know exactly what goes together once you’re there. No standing around debating what to wear when you could be relaxing.
Create a relaxed itinerary.
I totally get it—you want to make the most out of your beach trip. But when it comes to beach vacations, less really is more. Try not to overschedule, especially if you’re traveling with kids. The whole point is to relax and recharge! I like to plan one main activity or outing per day and keep the rest flexible. Jot down a few restaurants to try or book those relaxing baybeds ahead of time. (Especially because they get booked out fast during the summer!).
Bonus: Having a loose itinerary helps with packing since you can plan outfits around each activity. Easy, breezy, and no last-minute outfit stress once you’re there.

What to Pack for a Beach Vacation
Swimsuits
Swimsuits are obviously, non-negotiable. I’ll be honest here, though, I kind of hate shopping for swim wear! I stick with my tried and true favorites, it saves me time, energy, and stress. Whether you’re into bikinis or one-pieces, the key is feeling confident and comfortable. I have a collection on my ShopMy page with all of my favorites.
Right now, I’m really loving Stylest swimsuits, particularly the DreamSculpt Square Neck style (use GRACE20). It has this nice shapewear effect that doesn’t feel uncomfortable or suffocating. I also think this Positano One-Piece is super cute if you like swimsuits with a design. Easy, chic, and perfect for everything from lounging in the sun to grabbing a seaside cocktail.
For even more options, check this post: “Let’s Talk Swimwear!” Carly and I each share our faves.
Coverups
One of my favorite ways to make a swimsuit feel extra pulled together? A great coverup. It’s that little layer that takes you from beach chair to boardwalk ice cream run without missing a beat. I always pack a few options—something easy to throw on, but still cute and intentional.
Right now, I’m loving this breezy maxi dress coverup and this oversized kaftan. Both feel effortless but chic. If you want more ideas, definitely check out my full roundup of the best swim coverups. There are some cute suits included there as well.
Beach Towels
A big, plush beach towel is always at the top of my packing list. It’s one of those little things that make your beach setup feel extra cozy and pulled together. I absolutely love this Cabana Stripe Beach Towel—so soft and oversized. It’s perfect for stretching out, whether I’m poolside or on the sand. If you’re after something lighter, a Turkish towel is a great option too. I love the Vine Floral Beach Towel for its breezy feel and easy-to-pack size. Both feel chic and functional, which is exactly what I want in my beach bag!

Sun Lotion
Sunscreen is a must-have for any beach trip. You can absolutely get that golden glow without skipping sun protection! My go-to is Coola’s Organic Sunscreen Spray. It goes on smoothly, feels incredibly lightweight, and comes in SPF 50. For my face, I’m loyal to Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. It’s water- and sweat-resistant and feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. No greasiness, no white cast.
If you want more SPF favorites, I’ve got a full list in my post, “Best SPF Products, According to Me.” Worth bookmarking before your next trip!
SPF Lip Balm
Sun protection isn’t just about your skin—don’t forget your lips! If you’ve ever had sunburned lips, you know it’s not something you want to repeat. I always pack a lip balm with SPF for beach days. Supergoop’s Glow Gloss with SPF 40 is my go-to, big Supergoop fan over here! It feels super smooth, doesn’t have that weird sunbalmy taste, and keeps your lips protected. I also love iNNBeauty’s tinted lip balm for a little color and extra hydration. Both are super easy to toss in your beach bag and are definitely worth having on hand all summer.
Flip Flops
You definitely need a solid pair of flip flops for any beach trip. Something easy to slip on for sandy walks or grabbing an iced coffee in town. I usually go for the classics like Havaianas, or something with a little extra cushion if I know I’ll be walking more.
And if you’re headed somewhere with a rocky shoreline (looking at you, New England beaches), do yourself a favor and grab water shoes. They might not be the chicest, but trust me, they’re worth it. It’s all about keeping things practical while still feeling pulled together.
Check out my post, “Colorful Style Under $200,” for a couple of other beach-friendly shoe (and accessory!) options.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses provide necessary sun protection but also pull your whole look together while on your beach vacation. Whether you’re into oversized, classic frames or something smaller and trendier, a good pair instantly makes you feel more styled. I always say that the right sunglasses can take a simple beach outfit from simple to sophisticated in seconds. I rounded up a few of my favorite sunglasses if you’re on the hunt for a new pair. From timeless to playful, there’s something for everyone.
Beach Read
You’ll never catch me at the beach without a good book in hand. There’s just something about settling in a chair, soaking up the sun, and getting totally lost in a story. Whether I’m in the mood for a twisty thriller or an inspiring memoir, a beach read is always part of my packing list.
If you’re looking for something new to dive into, I’ve rounded up some great books to read at the beach. Or you can peek at what’s on my summer reading list this year!
Beach Chairs and Umbrella
If you’re planning to spend a full day by the water, a beach chair and umbrella are a must. I get, it’s a lot to lug up and down the beach. But trust me, you’ll be so much more comfortable than just lying on a towel. Plus, having a little shade makes all the difference when the sun gets intense.
I love this retro-inspired chair and umbrella set. It feels super chic but still practical. It also reminds me of the setup I have by my pool at home. Cozy, stylish, and functional—everything you want for a relaxing beach day.
Beach Cooler
Packing snacks and chilled drinks for the beach? You’ll definitely want a cooler to keep everything cold—no matter what you’re bringing. Nothing’s worse than reaching for a cool water bottle after basking in the sun only to find it warm. I’m obsessed with this one that looks like a woven picnic basket. It’s functional but still really cute, which makes carrying a cooler up and down much more enjoyable.
Beach Bag
No beach packing list is complete without a great beach bag to haul all your essentials from your vacation rental to your spot in the sand. I always reach for my roomy raffia tote—something that holds everything without feeling bulky. Think sunscreen, portable speaker, your favorite beach read, snacks, sunglasses… all in one place. I love a Mary Poppins moment when it comes to beach bags!
If you’re looking for options, I rounded up some of my favorite beach bags in all different styles and materials. Check it out and find one that fits your vibe perfectly.
Post-Beach Skincare
Spending hours in the sun and saltwater is good for the soul, but not always good for your skin. That’s why I never skip packing a few skincare essentials when I head to the beach. I always bring a gentle exfoliating scrub for both my face and body. (If you have a sunburn, this is not for you—it will only irritate it!). Sunburn or not, I always apply lightweight body oil to lock in hydration. And for my face, a purifying mask is a must to detox and clear out pores after a long beach day.

First Aid Kit
A beach trip is all about relaxing, but I always like to be just a little prepared. This is especially true when it comes to the unexpected. Packing a small first aid kit is one of those things you’ll be glad you have if you need it. This one is my favorite. It has all the basics—band-aids, tweezers, cotton swabs, and all those other little essentials. It takes up almost no room in a beach bag but is perfect for a little extra peace of mind.

Stay chic, stylish, and ready for anything during your beach vacation!
Summer really is the best. It was my favorite season when I lived in New York but I still love it (even in hot, humid Charleston.) Between the outfits, the trips, the slowed-down pace, and all the beach days, it just feels like the best kind of reset. Not only do I love creating chic and easy vacation outfits, but I’ve also learned the beauty of being prepared. That’s exactly why I put this beach vacation packing list together.
