This year, audiences have an extra reason to celebrate as Helgi Tomasson’s iconic production marks its 20th anniversary. From December 6 through December 29, the War Memorial Opera House will host an extended run of performances, inviting fans old and new to experience the magic of this holiday masterpiece.
A Legacy of Innovation and Tradition
San Francisco Ballet holds the distinct honor of being the first American ballet company to present a full-length Nutcracker back in 1944. This groundbreaking production paved the way for The Nutcracker to become a beloved holiday staple across the United States. Tomasson’s production, first introduced in 2004 during his tenure as SF Ballet’s Artistic Director, brought a fresh vision to the classic tale. Set in early 20th-century San Francisco, the story draws inspiration from the Panama Pacific International Exposition, adding a uniquely local twist to the beloved storyline.
The production’s visual splendor is brought to life through exquisite scenic design by Tony Award-winner Michael Yeargan, stunning costumes by Tony Award-winner Martin Pakledinaz, atmospheric lighting by James F. The role of the Nutcracker Prince will be danced by Principal Dancer Harrison James, Soloist Fernando Carratalá Coloma, and Corps de Ballet Member Adrian Zeisel.
