AI Styling Tool Alta Partners with Poshmark

Alta, the AI personal styling and shopping tool announced on Thursday a new partnership with Poshmark. Through the team-up, users will be able to discover and style Poshmark finds with the apparel they already own that’s loaded into the app, a la the “Clueless” virtual closet.
It will start with preowned luxury handbags from the likes of Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Gucci. Purchases will be conducted through Poshmark. The partnership marks the secondhand marketplace e-tailer’s first team-up with an AI application.
“We have a strong conviction that AI is going to influence how marketplaces connect buyers and sellers, which may be a departure from traditional ways like discovery and feed or search,” said Adi Thatcher, senior vice president of product at Poshmark. “For us to integrate with a partner that maybe has a leg up or has got some traction in AI styling, on both sides of the market, I think is going to play a critical role.”
Thatcher said that Poshmark is looking to expand the partnership with Alta in future rollouts to other apparel categories at varying price points. He added that Poshmark is focused on strengthening its AI and machine learning capabilities as it enters a new era under new CEO Namsun Kim.
“As more shoppers want to make sustainable purchases, more fashion tech platforms will need to offer secondhand and vintage selections,” Alta founder Jenny Wang said in an email.
In June, Alta announced it had secured an $11 million investment in a funding round that was led by Menlo Ventures. Last month, Poshmark founder and Alta investor Manish Chandra stepped down from his 15-year tenure as Poshmark chief executive, but his departure will not impact Poshmark’s partnership with Alta operationally or strategically.
