30 Ct. Type IIa Pink Diamond Could Fetch Over $2M at Auction

An unmounted 30.1 ct. round brilliant-cut light pink diamond graded VVS2 for clarity is at the forefront of the 160 lots in Bonhams’ Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite auction on Nov. 28. It is expected to sell for between $1.5 million and $2.3 million (or $12 million–$18 million in Hong Kong dollars).

Sourced from the private collection of a prominent Asian connoisseur who has owned it for over five decades, the diamond is classified based on its chemical composition as Type IIa, denoting exceptional purity. Such diamonds “contain little if any nitrogen…often have relatively few inclusions and are noted for their mostly homogenous color,” according to Bonhams, which said that Type IIa is “very rare in nature.”

“It is exciting to present the remarkable colored diamond at auction, allowing the opportunity for collectors around the world to own such a coveted piece,” Stewart Young, the auction house’s director of jewelry, said in a statement.

“To coincide with the prestigious opening of the new Bonhams Asia headquarters, we are delighted to present the live Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite sale that includes some impressive jewels from heritage jewelry houses and high-quality gemstones from different geological locations popular with gem collectors, including a pair of pink sapphire earrings, cobalt blue and pink spinels,” said Young.

Another highlight of the Hong Kong sale is a Kat Florence necklace with a 126.25 ct. Mozambique paraiba-type tourmaline and 16.28 cts. t.w. brilliant-cut diamonds (estimate $190,000–$320,000, or HK$1.5 million to HK$2.5 million). Other lots showcase a breadth of colored stones—rubies, sapphires, emeralds, diamonds, and more—and designs from maisons including Bulgari, Cartier, and David Webb.
