Respiratory diseases are caused by viruses that affect the respiratory system.

Common respiratory diseases:

  • Cold (rhinovirus or enterovirus)
  • Flu (Influenza A and B)
  • Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2)
  • VRS (Virus Respiratory Sincitial)
  • Adenovirus
  • PIVH (human parainfluenza virus)

Who is at risk of respiratory diseases?

Anyone can get sick from a respiratory virus, but some people are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill

  • People with weakened immune systems
  • pregnant people
  • People with disabilities
  • People with certain medical conditions, such as:
    • Lung diseases
    • diabetes
    • Heart disease

How can we protect ourselves and other people from respiratory viruses?

Stay up to date on recommended vaccines, especially for flu, RSV and Covid-19. Vaccinations can be helpful in protecting you from serious illnesses caused by respiratory viruses.

Other steps you can take to avoid getting sick from respiratory viruses

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Clean door handles and other frequently touched surfaces
  • Stay home if you feel sick
  • Prevents sick children from going to school
  • Use an air purifier
  • Wear a mask in public
