Your Sonos audio system simply received the largest sound improve ever, however there’s a value concerned

Sonos currently makes some of our favorite speakers on the market. For all their clever tricks, one thing Sonos speakers couldn’t previously do was high-resolution audio streaming. Yes, music streaming service Qobuz has beaten more established competitors like Tidal and Amazon Music HD to deliver high definition music streaming to Sonos for the first time.

So you can now take full advantage of the expensive components in your speakers and enjoy the convenience of streaming at the same time.

Qobuz has confirmed that it will offer Sonos customers 24-bit wireless streaming, resulting in “studio quality” music that preserves “all the details and colors of the original recordings.” While it has been possible to listen to high-resolution audio through a Sonos speaker for some time, it would require customers to play a 24-bit FLAC or ALAC file from a local hard drive.

With the introduction of Qobuz, you can listen to high-resolution audio as well as Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, TuneIn or any of the other numerous streaming services built into the Sonos app. To hear Qobuz, you need to be running the Sonos S2 app for smartphones, PCs or tablets.

Sonos launched its S2 app in June 2020. The new software was a clean affair for Sonos on which new functions could build. With the arrival of S2, Sonos had to drop some of its oldest kits, including first-generation Play: 5, Sonos Connect, and Sonos Connect: Amp, to name a few. If one of these speakers is lying around, you can still wirelessly stream music around your home. However, you have to stick to the previous generation of the phone app which is now called S1.

For those with newer models running with the S2 app, you’ll need to add Qobuz as a streaming service to your account. Even then, not every Sonos product in your home may be able to stream 24-bit audio. The studio-quality streaming music quality promised by Qobuz will be available for Sonos One, One SL, Five and Play: 5 speakers, Sonos Arc, Beam, Playbar and Playbase soundbars as well as for portable Sonos speakers, Sonos Move and Sonos Roam.
