Uber has spent $ 1.1 billion to acquire alcohol-supply start-up Drizly. For those who don’t know, Drizly is a US start-up focused on getting beer, wine and spirits to your doorstep “in under 60 minutes”. It’s essentially a fast pizza delivery company, but instead of sliced pepperoni, you get cans of your favorite beers, 12 packs of lager, bottles of wine, liquor and mixers, and of course, a solid pub of snacks, including chips, peanuts and cheese and crackers.
Drizly is currently only available in the US and Canada. The selection of beers, wines and snacks varies depending on the local offer. On its website, the liquor delivery company explains: “From coast to coast, we work with local businesses to give you the widest choice and the best prices.
“Drizly gives you a better way to shop for beer, wine, and spirits near you. Choose to have it delivered immediately or to schedule it for later.”
After the acquisition, Uber confirmed that Drizly will operate as a standalone brand for the time being. However, Uber will work on integrating the Drizly system with Uber Eats eventually. Uber Eats is a grocery delivery project for the Ride Hail app that has seen profits skyrocket following the lockdown measures enforced during the pandemic.
As people travel less frequently, Uber bookings have seen the same decline as public transit. However, food delivery has grown in popularity.
Now that it’s part of a large multinational like Uber, we hope Drizly will expand into new brands faster than usual. With luck, this means that Brits who worry about making too many trips to the local supermarket to stock themselves with liquid guts will soon be able to taste the products of their favorite independent brewers, a bottle of red or get a salted snack.
The acquisition will be mutually beneficial, Uber told shareholders after the announcement. While Drizly is now integrated into the Uber Eats app, Drizly drivers can access Uber’s GPS technology, which the company has developed over the years in collaboration with its driver fleets. Uber says drivers who work for the brand now have more opportunities to earn – given the options to deliver groceries, drive people, and receive courier drinks.
Drizly is the latest in a series of moves by Uber to expand its business model by simply moving people from one place to another. Last year the company announced the launch of an Uber Connect package delivery service.
