Samsung is back with its second hardware event for Galaxy Unpacked in 2021, and this time it was all about the company’s next mid-range devices. The new Galaxy A52, A52 5G and Galaxy A72 were unveiled during the showcase, which was not held in person due to guidelines, and these new phones are sure to deliver an impressive punch considering they can pocket one for around £ 400.
According to Samsung, these new Galaxy smartphones are designed to have the features consumers want most – with a good camera, long battery, impressive screen, and affordable price that are top priorities.
In the last few years, Samsung has not integrated all functions into its most expensive smartphones. The South Korean company is increasingly focusing on the middle class to fend off competition from Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and Googe. And if you look at the spec sheet on the latest Galaxy A-series, it seems that Samsung has ticked all the right boxes.
All three new smartphones feature an edge-to-edge Super AMOLED screen with small bezels to push most of the screen into the body. Those who buy the A72 and A52 get a smooth 90Hz refresh rate, while the A52 5G goes a step further with a 120Hz screen. This means it offers an experience as good as the much more expensive Galaxy S21.
For comparison, a few years ago most phones only had a 60 Hz screen. The higher refresh rate makes animations appear smoother, scrolling faster and fast gameplay more responsive.
All three phones also offer a much brighter experience, which should make them more visible outdoors. Samsung says it has stepped things up from 600nits on its earlier midrange phones to 800nits on the A52 and A72.
If you’ve spent hours surfing the web and checking Instagram, there’s “Eye Comfort Sheild” technology that allows you to adjust the color temperature and reduce blue light emissions to reduce eye fatigue. Under these screens there is also an embedded fingerprint that you can use to easily access your files.
When you turn the phones, you’ll find a quad rear camera with a 64-megapixel main lens, plus ultra-wide-angle, portrait, and macro options. Samsung wants this snapper to be very easy to use and has built in a scene optimizer that allows you to find out where you are and adjust the settings accordingly. In fact, there are a total of 30 scenes available so you should find the perfect look no matter what you’re shooting. This includes people, places, food, and even your pet.
In addition to some stunning images, you can also film 4K quality footage. With the new video snap function, you can capture high quality images directly from the video material.
Another advantage of this camera system is that it has a full night mode, which should improve the quality even when taking pictures in very poor lighting conditions.
Those who choose the A72 will also get an upgraded zoom lens with 3x optical imaging offered by this unit.
If you go under the hood, you’ll find two days of battery life. This is aided by Adaptive Power Saving, which adapts to your usage and can even shut down apps that have not been used after a few days. Fast charging can also result in things being full again in under an hour.
The new A-series has 128 or 256GB of storage that can be fully upgraded via an SD card, and there is also a fast octa-core processor that should handle most of your daily numeric tasks.
Other features worth mentioning are two Dolby Atmos speakers. The devices are delivered with One UI 3.0. Samsung also confirms that these phones will receive security updates for four years.
As the name suggests, the A52 5G also gets full access to the latest network speeds, allowing you to download files at over 300Mbps. The price for the A52 5G is £ 399 and the A72 is £ 429. The A52 standard will not be introduced in the UK
“At Samsung, we are committed to delivering innovative, industry-leading products to our customers at any price, so we are excited to launch the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and Samsung Galaxy A72 as great additions to our smartphone portfolio,” said Conor Pierce , Corporate Vice President for Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland.
