Sky has secured an additional 10,000 hours of exclusive shows and films for its viewers in the UK over the next year. The satellite has signed a multi-year partnership to bring Netflix rival Paramount + to its Sky Q set-top box from 2022.
For those who didn’t know, Paramount + is a streaming service from Paramount Pictures (that’s the studio with the snow-capped mountain top and the stars surrounding the top) that’s currently only available in the US. Owned by Comcast and ViacomCBS, Netflix rival provides access to shows from a number of popular US broadcasters including CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV and Smithsonian Channel. As the name suggests, it also includes hundreds of Paramount Pictures movies.
To compete with Prime Video and Netflix, Paramount + commissions a variety of original projects, including more than a dozen South Park films, new episodes of SpongeBob Square Pants, and the film SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.
Series such as Stephen King’s The Stand, Star Trek: Picard, The Good Fight, Why Women Kill, Tooning Out the News and Star Trek: Discovery are already broadcast exclusively on the service in the United States.
And the good news is that all of that content – and more – is coming to Sky Q thanks to the new partnership.
According to the broadcaster, “Paramount + is the latest in a series of apps coming to Sky Q that add 10,000+ hours of content, further enhancing Sky’s aggregation strategy and enabling Sky customers to bring more of the best content together in one place.” seen on the Sky Q platform. “
While Paramount + starts at $ 4.99 per month for a basic plan, prices go up to $ 9.99 for an ad-free subscription. And for Sky Q customers? It’s completely free.
Sky has confirmed that after the launch, Sky Cinema subscribers will receive exclusive Paramount + films at no additional cost – while at the same time offering access to both streaming services with more than 10,000 hours of additional content at an affordable price.
As part of this partnership, Paramount Pictures’ feature films will continue to be available at Sky Cinema in the UK and will join Sky Cinema in Germany and Italy in 2022. Sky Q customers who do not have a Sky Cinema subscription can use a standalone Paramount + account as an add-on.
New shows and films to be released in the UK over the next year include a collection of exclusive Paramount + originals in the script and exciting new versions of iconic franchises including HALO, The Offer and the new iCarly series. As the international home of SHOWTIME, the service features The Man Who Fell to Earth, Ripley, Super Pumped and American Gigolo in addition to popular ViacomCBS titles such as Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Star Trek: Prodigy and MTV unplugged.
