Anyone who’s seen ABCs black knows and loves the way current sociopolitical issues are expressed through a mix of family life norms and comedic style (think of an awkward family sitcom with a touch of social justice). As you’d expect, costume designer Michelle Cole keeps fashion as current as the topics. You really can’t go wrong with Tracee Ellis Ross playing Rainbow Johnson as one of the leading actresses who is such a big fashion icon herself – have you seen her? The high grade or when she wore 12 different looks to the AMAs in 2018?
Rainbow Johnson’s style is elegant and sophisticated, and includes many textures, prints, and colors in her wardrobe. During the current season we’ve seen her in printed long-sleeved overalls by Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney, as well as in classic two-piece sets from brands like Kenzo, Zara, Co, Victoria Beckham and Rachel Comey.
Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) is known for his bright, colorful, printed sweaters and polos. He’s definitely not afraid of high-end designers and wears casual sweatshirts by Alexander McQueen, AMI, Acne Studios, Burberry, Amiri, Versace and Gucci. One of Andre’s most famous pieces would definitely have to be his brightly floral Etro polo t-shirt.
While Rainbow and Andre may pay a lot of attention to their style, their kids, Junior, Jack, and Diane are particular topics of conversation. Junior (Marcus Scribner) wears brands like Scotch and Soda, Sandro, Ovadia & Sons and Kenzo – his style mimicking that of his father with bright colors and bubbly prints. Jack (Miles Brown) has stuck to brands like Urban Outfitters and worn graphic Tupac t-shirts. Diane (Marsai Martin) has evolved over the course of the series, but her most common brands are Maje, Sandro and AQUA. She’s nervous about playful patterns like batik and rainbows. And while she’s not in the current season, we shouldn’t mention Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) who has a very iconic style that she shows in the black ground out Grown.
