Despite the ongoing Google ban, Huawei continues to launch smartphones with the radical Mate X2. As with all of the latest Huawei branded kits, you won’t find any signs of Google’s apps or the Play Store on this handset. However, this may not bother you if you keep an eye on the design. The eye-catching Mate X2 has a borderless OLED screen on the front, which then opens like a book and reveals a huge 8-inch tablet-style display.
Huawei boasts that both screens offer a fast 90Hz refresh rate for silky smooth scrolling, and the phone also features a magnetically controlled nano-optical layer to minimize reflections.
Another addition to the Mate X2 is a sloping back that allows the device to be as thin as 4.4mm on one end. According to Huawei, this design was developed in such a way that the point of equilibrium is shifted slightly away from the center of the device so that it is perfectly balanced whether it is unfolded or closed.
It’s not hard to see where Hauwei got the inspiration for Mate X2 from, as it looks almost identical to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. However, the Chinese tech company has fixed an issue that is occurring with the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Huawei boasts that the Mate X2 comes with an intricate multi-dimensional hinge that allows the device to fold perfectly with a nearly imperceptible gap and minimizes the wrinkles on the outer screen when the device is unfolded. This technology took over five years to perfect. We hope it is as good as the marketing game suggests.
Other design features include a high-strength steel and carbon fiber composite housing that makes the X2 both light and strong. There are also a number of colors to choose from, including a striking blue and pink.
On the back is a Leica-powered quad rear-view camera that offers that usual portrait and impressive nighttime shots.
The 10x telephoto camera features also have a periscope optic design and support 10x optical zoom, 20x hybrid zoom, and 100x digital zoom for long-distance shooting.
There’s also a 16MP ultra wide camera that not only offers an impressive field of view for scenic shots, but also supports macro mode for capturing objects that are just 2.5 cm from the lens.
Under the hood, you’ll find the latest Kirin 9000 processor, 5G data downloads, and a 4500mAh battery that supports 55W HUAWEI SuperCharging.
“With some of the best software and hardware innovations at its core, the HUAWEI Mate X2 represents a huge leap forward and sets the bar for future foldable devices,” said Richard Yu, executive director and chief executive officer of Huawei Consumer BG. “While the HUAWEI Mate Xs was largely recognized as the best foldable device in its class, we continued to look for new ways to further improve the foldable experience. The HUAWEI Mate X2 represents the future of smartphone technology with groundbreaking innovations and a truly fantastic user experience across the board. “
HUAWEI Mate X2 is available in white, black, crystal blue and crystal pink and will be available in selected countries from February 25, 2021. Availability in the UK and Europe has yet to be confirmed.
