The mask life is here and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to subside anytime soon. At first I skipped makeup and lived in lounge clothes, but I pulled it together and found that getting dressed for the day and putting on makeup really helps me feel together and feel some normality during these weird times. But a full face made up of makeup just doesn’t always make sense these days, does it?
We’ve all heard of maskne (acne caused by wearing a mask), and maybe some of us thought (um, me) it wasn’t going to happen and left with our faces full anyway. Can you guess who kicked yourself? Now that I’m older and a few months wiser (haha), I thought I’d share what cruelty-free makeup is best for keeping masks at bay and looking fabulous while wearing a mask.
First, try to keep the foundation type products light and only apply when needed. I’m in a cruelty-free, toned, moisture streak so my skin can breathe a little longer than on days when more protection is needed.
My cruelty free favorites right now are Ilia Super Serum skin color with sun protection factor 40 and Cover girl Clean matte BB cream (not illustrated). I think it’s great that the Clean Beauty Ilia Beauty option already has SPF built in, along with hyaluronic acid in the formula, which moisturizes the skin. CoverGirl Clean Matte BB Cream is a great, affordable option for a moisturizing, water-based and breathable foundation. CoverGirl Clean fresh skin milk (vegan) is also a great option for those who have normal to dry skin (the formula contains coconut oil, which can clog pores for those who are already acne prone). We should note that moisturizing the skin can help reduce friction and irritation from masks.
Still concerned about outbreaks? Skip complexion products completely under the mask and stick to a light moisturizer with ceramides or hyaluronic acid for easy hydration of the skin.
I still wear concealer under my eyes most days and choose more or less coverage every day. I really enjoy it on bright days CoverGirl CleanFresh Hydrating Concealer when my under eye area just needs a little help. It has a buildable cover (light to medium) but I usually use one layer with my Beauty Blender on “good days”. The CleanFresh option is vegan and creates a glowing finish that I enjoy. If you need more coverage, ELF’s Camo Concealer is very popular for its ability to provide matte full coverage with no caking and there are several color options to choose from.
There’s no need to use blush or highlighter with a mask covering half of your face so your eyes are the focus when you’re on the go. Leaping Bunny certified, Arches and halos Brow products can help shape and define brows on a budget with their family of products (and you can find them at Target!).
I personally love that Angled brow shading pen because it allows me to make thin hair-like strokes as well as large shades with its angled tip. It has a spoolie, comes in 8 colors and is not too hard or too soft, which makes it my favorite product due to its lightness. Pencil not your thing? They also have powders, pomades, and mousse available to meet your browing needs!
Eye shadows are a great way to get focus on the eyes. Whether your style is bold and colorful or soft and natural, adding an artistic touch to any look is fun. I enjoyed getting pretty natural with the color choices and love the new ELF Cosmetics Bite Size Eyeshadow Palettes ($ 3!) That contain four coordinated hues with a mix of matte and shimmer hues. With a darker shade to work into the crease and a lightening shimmering shade in the inner corner of the eye, I create an uncomplicated, eye-brightening look with the Cream & Sugar palette (illustration).
Lining my eyes gives my lashes a little boost as they are pretty short and need all the help they can get. It is a sure favorite Pixi Beauty Endless Silky Eyeliner, the Define eye waterline, and Eye bright liner. It might seem a little crazy using three liners at the same time, but it really makes my eyes pop. The Eye Bright Liner is a delicate nude pink that I use on the lower waterline to look “awake”. The Eye Define Waterline Liner is applied to my top waterline and is a real game changer for girls with sagging eyelashes like me. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t do this forever, but better late than never! And the Endless Silky Eye Liner is what I put on my actual lids. My favourite colours? RoseGlow or Black Cocoa in a very thin line.
We can’t forget the eyelashes now! I have probably a dozen different mascaras in my vanity, but I always reach for a select few more than others. CoverGirls Exhibitionist Mascara gives me some volume but in a believable way and I love it. The formula won’t peel off, the brush effortlessly coats my lashes and is also available in a waterproof formula. And that comes from someone who normally loathes a volume formula and goes on an extender mascara 99.9% of the time – it’s really good! Do you want a really lengthening mascara? Take the chance NYX Doll Eye Mascara This has fibers so that those eyelashes can stretch without lumps!
After all, I love wearing a few fake eyelashes, but most days it’s too much work. But for those days when you want to enchant things Lyda Beauty Synthetic Mink Lashes Add whatever extra wow factor you want. These sets are soft and durable, last a long time and look beautiful!
