GoCycle has launched its next generation of foldable electric bikes. The British brand, founded by a former McLaren designer, has won a number of awards since its launch in April 2009. With the latest generation of bicycles, GoCycle has developed a new electric motor called carbon fiber frame and fork, MotoGP-inspired tires and a USB port integrated in the frame so that you can charge your AirPods or smartphone from the bike’s battery while on the move.
The fourth generation of GoCycle offers three advantages: Gocycle G4, G4i and the flagship Gocycle G4i / +. The new range starts at £ 3,399 and has a maximum price of £ 4,999.
The biggest difference between the models is the battery life and weight. While the GoCycle G4 has a 40-mile range between charges, the G4i and G4i + can accompany you on a 50-mile journey without a plug in sight. Unlike previous GoCycle models, fast charging is now standard on all fourth-generation models. GoCycle G4i and G4i + can now be fully charged in three and a half hours (three hours for the G4) thanks to the 4A 36V charger.
You can still charge the battery in the frame or – if you don’t have a plug in your garage – eject the battery to recharge it in another room.
If your commute is up stairs and you fold and haul your bike every day, then the G4i + should be your choice. That’s because it weighs 16.3 kg compared to 16.6 kg for the G4 and G4i. According to GoCycle, the G4 range is “one of the lightest premium folding electric bikes on the market”. To this end, the British brand has made a major reduction in the weight of each component – even the disc rotors are lighter, although larger, to improve braking compared to the previous generation.

All three new models from GoCycle have the new customer-specific electric motor “G4drive” in common. According to the company, the new electric motor is quieter and still offers more torque, more power and starting ability at low speeds. According to GoCycle, the proprietary G4 drive and transmission have been in development for several years and are subject to many, many miles of testing at its research and development facility.
The G4i and G4i + both have automatic gear shifting so you don’t even have to worry about falling off as you approach an intersection or an especially daunting hill.
In most cases, the G4drive assesses how much power you need from the motor based on the force exerted on the pedals. If you have trouble pedaling, GoCycle can help you climb a hill. However, if you’re already running on electricity, you won’t see that much battery. However, there is also a manual performance upgrade if you really want to fly from a standing start at an intersection (or have a friend ride a manual bike). As with all electric bikes in the UK, the motor is limited to speeds of up to 15 mph.
Another addition to these new electric bikes are the newly designed tires. According to GoCycle, the tailor-made MotoGP-inspired tread tires are equipped with silica compound for superior grip and sure-footed handling. Compared to previous e-bikes from the company, the new tires have a wider design and an increased air volume promise a comfortable ride over urban surfaces.
GoCycle designer and founder Richard Thorpe said of the fourth generation: “G4 has been in development for many years and is the most significant product update for GoCycle since our engineering program from G1 to G2. Our fourth generation models were created through a combination of listening to our customers and our continuing mission to create the world’s best urban electric bikes. In addition to setting a new standard for GoCycle, G4 will set a new standard of performance for all of our competitors in the portable electric bike segment. “
“What excites me the most is our future roadmap and the potential for GoCycle to continue innovating at a faster pace than our competitors. At GoCycle, we cook with different ingredients so that we can redefine what an e-bike can be and do. G4 is very exciting for us and offers a platform that will support even more significant developments in our pipeline in the years to come! “
Anyone who purchases a fourth generation GoCycle model can use the redesigned smartphone app, which allows you to adjust the settings for the bike. Interesting health stats such as calorie consumption, maximum and average pedal force for each trip are also reported. The connection to the app has been improved through the integration of Low Energy Bluetooth.
The GoCycle G4, G4i and G4i + models are available for pre-order starting today. The models will be delivered this year.
